Granola released a rebuilt version of Granola Chat, the conversational interface inside its AI meeting notes app. The update addresses a core challenge for knowledge workers: how to quickly surface insights from months or years of accumulated meeting notes and transcripts.
The new chat interface adapts its approach based on question type. Quick queries like "have I met Sarah before?" receive fast answers, while deeper questions such as "what's our unspoken company culture?" trigger more comprehensive searches across longer time horizons. The system decides automatically which retrieval strategy to use, eliminating the need for users to specify scope or context manually.
Handling Context at Scale
The announcement positions this as a ground-up rebuild rather than an incremental improvement. For teams conducting back-to-back meetings, the accumulated notes and transcripts quickly become unwieldy. Traditional search falls short when looking for patterns, themes, or insights that span multiple conversations.
Granola's approach mirrors recent industry moves toward more intelligent context retrieval. Rather than forcing users to choose between speed and depth, the system evaluates the question and selects an appropriate strategy. A factual check about prior interactions gets answered immediately; a cultural analysis prompts the AI to synthesize patterns across extended periods.
The update arrives months after Granola introduced Team Folders for shared notes. That feature addressed collaboration; this one focuses on individual productivity and knowledge retrieval. Both reflect the company's trajectory from simple note-taking to becoming what it calls "a second brain" for meeting-heavy teams.
Platform Availability
The rebuilt chat is available now in the Granola desktop app for both Mac and Windows. The company has not announced mobile availability, though it recently added phone call recording to extend note-taking beyond computer-based meetings.
Granola competes in an increasingly crowded space of AI meeting assistants. While tools like Descript focus on editing and Claude offers general-purpose AI chat, Granola's bet is that purpose-built interfaces for meeting-specific knowledge retrieval will win with teams who spend substantial time in synchronous conversations.
The chat interface joins other recent additions like Zapier integration and natural language editing. The company raised $20 million in October 2024 and has added features steadily since, targeting knowledge workers who need to extract value from conversations rather than just transcribe them.
Users can access the new chat through the existing Granola app. No separate download or opt-in appears to be required.
