Notion Ships HTML Blocks for MCP Agents in One-Day Build

Notion shipped HTML block support for MCP agents, responding to user requests with a same-day build and release. The update extends HTML block compatibility beyond native Notion agents to any agent using the Model Context Protocol.

The company announced the update on LinkedIn, noting they heard requests on July 1 and shipped by July 2. This marks one of Notion's fastest turnarounds from user feedback to production release.

How HTML Blocks Work with MCP

HTML blocks in Notion let teams render custom interfaces, embed visualizations, and display formatted content. Until now, these blocks had limited agent compatibility.

With MCP support, agents can now generate and manipulate HTML blocks programmatically. Developers building custom tools via Notion's Developer Platform can use HTML blocks to:

  • Create dynamic dashboards from live data
  • Render charts and visualizations from database queries
  • Display formatted reports generated by agents
  • Build interactive interfaces within pages

The update expands on Notion's recent developer platform launch, which introduced workers, custom tools, and declarative schemas for syncing external data. Teams using Cursor agents or other MCP-compatible tools can now leverage HTML blocks as part of their automation workflows.

Developer Response and Use Cases

The swift implementation suggests Notion is prioritizing developer feedback as it builds out its agent ecosystem. The company has been steadily expanding agent capabilities, recently adding Cursor agents to task boards and integrating the Cursor SDK for task delegation.

HTML block support opens new possibilities for teams building automated workflows. A support team could build an agent that queries ticket data from Zendesk, processes it, and generates an HTML dashboard in Notion. Product teams could create agents that pull metrics from analytics tools and render formatted reports with charts and tables.

The update also benefits teams already using Notion's managed databases and sync capabilities. Developers can now pair continuous data syncing with visual HTML outputs, creating self-updating dashboards that require no manual intervention.

Notion's Developer Platform remains in active development. The company has been shipping updates at a rapid pace since its initial platform announcement, positioning itself as infrastructure for AI-powered workflows rather than just a documentation tool.

Developers can access the HTML block MCP functionality now through the Notion CLI. Documentation and examples are available in the official developer resources.
