Netlify Database Now Available With Integrated Postgres and Deploy Preview Branching

Netlify Database is now generally available, bringing fully managed Postgres to the platform alongside a workflow designed for AI-assisted development. The service handles provisioning, migrations, and deploy preview isolation without requiring developers to manage infrastructure.

The release was announced on Netlify's blog on May 4, following several months of preview access. The company positions the service as a persistence layer for agent-generated applications, where AI tools write both schema and application code while Netlify handles the database lifecycle.

Deploy Preview Databases

Each deploy preview receives its own isolated database branch. When a developer pushes code that modifies the schema, Netlify automatically creates a copy of the production database, applies the migrations, and connects the preview environment to the isolated branch. This allows teams to test schema changes, seed data modifications, and new features without touching production data.

The isolation extends to CI/CD workflows. Automated tests can run against preview databases that mirror production structure but contain independent data. Once a pull request merges, the preview database is discarded and the schema changes apply to the main branch.

Agent-Driven Schema Design

Netlify Database integrates with the company's agent runners, which use AI models to generate both database schemas and application code from natural language prompts. A developer can describe an application, such as a receipt-based expense tracker or a meal planning tool that processes fridge photos, and the agent outputs a working schema alongside the frontend and API code.

The workflow builds on Netlify's Start With a Prompt feature, which launched in April. That tool generates initial project scaffolding; Netlify Database extends it by handling data persistence without requiring manual schema definition or migration scripts.

The service uses standard Postgres under the hood. Developers can connect using any Postgres-compatible client or ORM. Netlify provides connection strings in environment variables, which update automatically when preview databases are created or destroyed.

Pricing and Technical Details

Netlify Database is available on all paid plans. The company has not published specific pricing tiers but confirmed the service uses consumption-based billing tied to storage and query volume.

The database runs on Netlify's infrastructure with automatic backups, point-in-time recovery, and connection pooling. Migrations are version-controlled and applied through Netlify's deployment pipeline. The system supports both automated migrations generated by agents and manually written migration files.

Netlify CTO Mathias Biilmann has written extensively about the shift toward agent-assisted development, most recently in a blog post on Agent Experience that described how non-engineers at Netlify built internal tools using the platform's AI features.

The company's broader strategy centers on removing infrastructure complexity for small teams and solo builders. Netlify Database joins recent launches including Stripe Projects integration and AI Gateway support for GPT-5.5 Instant. Each service targets developers who want to ship applications quickly without managing separate database hosts, API gateways, or payment processors.

Full documentation is available on Netlify's website. The service is now accessible to all paid accounts through the Netlify dashboard.
