Netlify has released Start with a Prompt, a feature that lets developers create and deploy web projects using natural language instructions. The update, announced on March 18, integrates AI-powered code generation directly into the platform's deployment workflow.
The feature targets developers building AI-enabled applications, with initial support optimized for TanStack AI implementations. Instead of starting from boilerplate or cloning repositories, users describe their project requirements in plain language, and Netlify generates a working codebase connected to production infrastructure.
How it works
Developers access the tool through app.netlify.com/start, where they enter a text prompt describing their intended project. The system generates code scaffolding, configures deployment settings, and connects the project to Netlify's edge network. All generated projects include Git integration, allowing teams to review generated code before merging changes.
The platform also introduced reusable Prompt Templates alongside the main feature. These templates provide pre-written prompts for common project types, reducing the trial-and-error typically associated with prompting AI systems. Templates cover scenarios like API integrations, authentication flows, and database connections.
Production infrastructure from day one
Unlike code generation tools that output static files, Netlify's implementation immediately provisions hosting, serverless functions, and edge caching. Projects created through prompts receive the same infrastructure configuration as manually deployed applications, including automatic SSL certificates and CDN distribution.
This approach addresses a common friction point in AI-assisted development: generated code often requires significant manual setup before reaching production. By embedding generation within an existing deployment platform, Netlify eliminates the translation step between prototype and live application.
The timing aligns with Netlify's broader AI infrastructure investments. The company recently outlined a code trust framework for AI-generated deployments and detailed how their People Team saves $10K annually building internal tools without traditional engineering resources.
Limitations and expansion plans
Current implementation focuses on JavaScript frameworks and TanStack AI patterns. Netlify has not specified which AI models power the generation system or whether developers can customize model selection. The company also has not disclosed pricing changes associated with AI-generated projects beyond standard hosting costs.
Competing platforms like Vercel with v0 and Replit offer similar prompt-to-deployment capabilities, though with different framework priorities and pricing models. Lovable and Bolt provide standalone code generation focused on full-stack applications rather than deployment integration.
Developers can access Start with a Prompt through existing Netlify accounts at no additional charge beyond standard hosting fees. The feature works with both free and paid plans, with generated projects counting against existing resource quotas.
