n8n is moving AI agents out of individual workflows and turning them into reusable, first-class objects. The new Agent Harness, announced on LinkedIn, gives each agent its own capabilities, memory and schedule, then makes it available across an n8n instance or organization through native chat.
It is a substantial architectural shift for the automation platform. Previously, an agent typically lived inside a workflow and depended on that workflow for its tools and execution context. With Agent Harness, teams can build and publish an agent once, then reach it through chat, schedules, other entry points or existing workflows.
Agents Become Reusable Infrastructure
n8n is not replacing its workflow canvas. The company positions workflows as the better option for deterministic processes, where steps, conditions and outputs should remain predictable. Agents are intended for tasks that require deciding what to do, selecting tools and delegating work dynamically.
The preview introduces several capabilities:
- Native skills, giving agents defined capabilities they can use across tasks.
- Sub-agents, allowing a primary agent to delegate parts of a job to specialist agents.
- Effort-based model routing, which can direct delegated tasks according to the level of effort required.
- Persistent episodic memory, so an agent can retain relevant context beyond one interaction.
- Plain-text schedules, which wake an agent with a specified task at a recurring time.
- Native chat connectors, providing a conversational route into published agents.
The accompanying n8n documentation describes separate draft and published versions, giving builders a way to change an agent before exposing the updated version to users. Published agents can be opened in chat, reached from other locations, run on a schedule or invoked inside workflows.
What It Changes for Builders
For small teams, the main benefit is reduced duplication. A customer support agent, research assistant or internal operations agent no longer needs to be rebuilt inside every automation that uses it. Its capabilities and memory can instead be maintained as a shared resource, while workflows continue handling fixed actions such as data validation, approvals and record updates.
The MCP library is central to that model. It gives agents access to external capabilities while preserving n8n workflows for structured logic. The release follows n8n's expansion of MCP integrations to 70 services, suggesting the company is assembling both sides of an agent platform: reusable reasoning objects and a broad tool layer.
There are practical cautions. Agent Harness remains in preview, and n8n says it expects to ship fixes quickly. Builders should test permissions, memory behavior, delegated tasks and scheduled runs before assigning agents to sensitive or business-critical work. The separation between draft and published versions should help, but it does not remove the need for monitoring and fallback workflows.
Self-hosted users can unlock the preview through additional environment variables, according to n8n's documentation. That continues the company's push to bring newer AI features to customer-managed installations, following its one-line AI assistant setup for self-hosted installs.
For n8n Cloud customers, access is rolling out in stages. The company advised users to keep their instances updated and said the feature should appear within a few weeks of the August 19 announcement. No fixed general-availability date was provided.
Frequently asked questions
What is n8n Agent Harness?
n8n Agent Harness is a preview system for creating agents as standalone, reusable objects instead of embedding them inside individual workflows. Each agent can have its own skills, sub-agents, memory, schedules and chat access, while still being callable from workflows.
Is Agent Harness available for self-hosted n8n installations?
Yes. n8n says self-hosted administrators can enable the preview using additional environment variables documented in its setup guide. Because it is a preview, teams should test it outside critical production processes first.
When will Agent Harness appear on n8n Cloud?
The cloud release is rolling out in stages. n8n said users who keep their instances updated should see it within a few weeks of the August 19, 2026 announcement, but it did not provide a specific date for every account.
