Granola Adds Chat History Picker to Preserve Past Conversations

Granola has added persistent conversation history to its AI Chat feature, addressing a key limitation that previously required users to restart discussions from scratch each session.

The AI meeting note platform announced the update on LinkedIn, introducing a new history picker that lets users access and continue previous conversations within Granola Chat. The feature maintains context across sessions, eliminating the need to re-establish background information when returning to ongoing topics.

Context Retention for Knowledge Workers

Granola Chat, introduced last September with Recipes, serves as an AI assistant layer over meeting notes. Users can query their meeting transcripts, generate summaries, or extract action items through natural language prompts. Until now, each conversation existed in isolation.

The history picker appears as a dropdown interface within Chat, displaying previous conversations by timestamp or topic. Users can select any past conversation to view the full thread and continue where they left off, rather than starting fresh queries that duplicate earlier work.

This matters most for professionals who return to the same projects or accounts across multiple meetings. A product manager tracking a feature launch, for instance, can now build on previous Chat queries about that initiative rather than re-asking basic questions each time. Customer success teams managing ongoing accounts gain similar continuity.

Competing With Dedicated AI Assistants

The update positions Granola Chat closer to standalone AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT, which have offered conversation history since launch. However, Granola maintains an advantage in its direct integration with meeting transcripts and calendar context.

Granola already supports multiple AI models through its Recipes feature, recently adding Gemini support. The conversation history applies across all models users might employ within Chat.

The company has steadily expanded beyond basic transcription. Recent additions include Focus Mode to reduce distractions, Crunched for annual meeting analytics, and an MCP integration that connects meeting context to external AI tools like Cursor.

Conversation persistence represents table stakes functionality for AI chat interfaces, but its absence until now suggests Granola prioritized other capabilities first. The company raised $125 million in March 2025 to expand its platform, according to its blog, signaling continued investment in features that help knowledge workers manage meeting overload.

The history picker is available now to all Granola users at no additional cost. The company has not specified storage limits for conversation history or retention policies for older chats.
