Notion has added a duplication feature for Custom Agents, allowing users to copy and customize any agent they can access. The update, announced on LinkedIn, automatically scopes duplicated agents to the viewer's permissions and sets them to private by default.
Streamlining Agent Workflows
The new capability addresses a common workflow challenge: reusing successful agent configurations without starting from scratch. When a user duplicates a Custom Agent, Notion automatically inherits the original's tools, prompts, and settings while restricting access to only what the duplicating user can see. This prevents inadvertent data exposure across permission boundaries.
Duplicated agents are private by default, giving users control over who can access their customized versions. Teams can now share agent templates more freely, knowing that colleagues can safely adapt them to their specific contexts without risking cross-team information leaks.
The feature builds on Notion's recent expansion of Custom Agents, which has included adding five new MCP connectors and integrating additional AI models like Grok. Custom Agents, part of Notion's broader AI strategy, allow teams to build specialized assistants that interact with their workspace data, execute custom tools, and automate repetitive tasks.
Access scoping is handled automatically based on the duplicating user's existing Notion permissions. If the original agent queries databases or pages the user cannot see, those references are either removed or flagged in the duplicated version. This ensures agents function within established access controls rather than circumventing them.
The update arrives as Notion continues investing in its Developer Platform, which lets teams build custom tools, sync external data sources, and extend agent capabilities through code. Duplication makes those custom-built agents more reusable across an organization, reducing redundant development work.
For small teams using Notion to centralize workflows, the ability to duplicate agents lowers the barrier to experimentation. A marketing team can clone a content planning agent and adjust it for campaign tracking; a product team can adapt a customer feedback agent for bug triage. Each team maintains control over their version without affecting the original.
The feature is available now to all Notion users with access to Custom Agents. Notion has not detailed whether duplication preserves execution history or usage analytics, though the company's focus on privacy-by-default suggests those elements likely do not carry over.
