Notion has added Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 to its AI toolkit, positioning the model as the foundation for handling complex custom agents and multi-step workflows that require advanced reasoning.
The update, announced on LinkedIn, makes Fable 5 available to Business and Enterprise plan subscribers. Notion frames the model as its choice for the most demanding automation tasks, noting it achieved new highs on internal benchmarks for multi-step work.
Opt-In Model with Different Data Handling
Unlike most of Notion's built-in language models, which do not retain user data, Fable 5 operates under a different policy. Anthropic retains data processed through Fable 5 to identify risks that only emerge across multiple requests. This approach allows the model to detect patterns and potential issues that wouldn't be visible in isolated queries.
Because of this data retention, Notion has made Fable 5 opt-in. Workspace admins must explicitly enable it through Settings, then Notion AI. The company is giving teams control over whether they want to trade off data privacy for the model's advanced capabilities.
This positions Fable 5 alongside Notion's recent push into custom agents, which the company has been expanding steadily. Users can already duplicate custom agents and leverage automated meeting agents for note-taking and Slack recaps.
Built for Workers and Complex Automation
Notion describes Fable 5 as the model it would deploy behind custom agents and "workers," the term it uses for automated processes that handle multi-step tasks. The company's Developer Platform, introduced earlier this year, lets teams build workers that sync external data sources into Notion databases or create custom tools for agents.

These workers operate on persistent cursors and declarative schemas, making it possible to continuously upsert records from services like Zendesk or Linear. Fable 5's higher benchmark performance suggests it could handle more intricate logic within these workflows, particularly where reasoning across multiple API calls or data transformations is required.
The model's introduction comes as Notion continues building out its agent ecosystem. The platform recently added five new MCP connectors to expand what custom agents can access.
Where This Fits in Notion's AI Strategy
Notion's decision to add Fable 5 as an opt-in premium model reflects a balancing act. The company wants to offer cutting-edge capabilities for teams running sophisticated automations, while maintaining its default stance of not retaining user data for most AI features.
For teams building agents that need to reason through complex, multi-step processes, Fable 5 provides a more capable foundation than lighter models. But the opt-in requirement means each organization has to make an explicit choice about whether the trade-off makes sense for their use case.
Business and Enterprise customers can enable Fable 5 now through workspace settings. Teams on lower-tier plans will continue using Notion's standard AI models, which maintain the platform's default no-retention data policy.
