n8n Launches Microsoft Agent 365 Trigger Node to Bring AI Agents Into Teams and Outlook

n8n bridges workflow automation and Microsoft 365 collaboration

n8n has announced on LinkedIn a new Microsoft Agent 365 Trigger node that allows agents built in n8n to be invoked directly from Microsoft Teams and Outlook. The node enables users to @mention AI agents in Teams chats or email them through Outlook as if they were human teammates, with Microsoft handling identity, access control, and compliance.

The integration arrives as enterprises seek to embed AI capabilities into existing collaboration workflows rather than forcing employees to context-switch between tools. With the Microsoft Agent 365 Trigger, technical teams can build custom agents in n8n using familiar workflow patterns, then surface those agents inside the productivity apps where work already happens.

How the Microsoft Agent 365 Trigger works

The new trigger node connects n8n workflows to Microsoft's agent infrastructure. When a user @mentions an agent in Teams or sends it an email in Outlook, Microsoft's platform routes the request to the corresponding n8n workflow. The workflow can execute arbitrary logic, call APIs, query databases, or orchestrate multi-step processes before returning a response to the user within the Microsoft interface.

Builders can equip their agents with access to tools, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and n8n sub-workflows. This architecture allows for sophisticated agent behaviors: an agent might retrieve data from an internal database, call a third-party API for enrichment, process the results through a sub-workflow, and format the output for the user, all while maintaining the security and governance policies enforced by Microsoft 365.

The setup requires configuration on both sides. In n8n, developers add the Microsoft Agent 365 Trigger node to a workflow and define how the agent should respond to incoming requests. On the Microsoft side, administrators register the agent within their tenant and configure which users or groups have permission to invoke it. Microsoft's identity layer ensures that only authorized users can interact with the agent, and all interactions are logged for audit purposes.

Enterprise governance meets workflow flexibility

One key advantage of this approach is that Microsoft handles the compliance and security layer while n8n provides the workflow orchestration. Enterprises can enforce their existing access policies, data loss prevention rules, and compliance requirements without modifying the underlying n8n workflows. This separation of concerns addresses a common pain point in enterprise AI deployments: maintaining governance without sacrificing the agility to build and iterate on agent logic.

The integration also supports scenarios where agents need to operate across organizational boundaries. For example, a customer support agent could be accessible to external partners through shared Teams channels while still respecting internal data access policies. Microsoft's identity and access management system ensures that the agent only exposes information appropriate for each user's role and context.

Upcoming walkthrough session

n8n is hosting a technical walkthrough session on May 19 at 5:30 PM CEST (11:30 AM ET) featuring Dylan Watkins from n8n, Manuel C. from Microsoft, and David Arens from n8n. The session will cover building the agent in n8n, configuring the Microsoft environment, and using the agent from inside Microsoft 365 apps. Registration details are available in the comments of the original LinkedIn post.

The announcement builds on n8n's recent momentum in the enterprise AI automation space. Earlier this month, the company secured a strategic investment from SAP at a $5.2 billion valuation, more than doubling its value from the previous year, and reported 10X revenue growth driven primarily by AI agent workflows.

For organizations already invested in both n8n and Microsoft 365, this integration offers a low-friction path to deploying AI agents where employees already spend their time. Rather than training users on new interfaces or asking them to switch contexts, agents become native participants in existing collaboration patterns.
