n8n Adds Markdown Support to Workflow Sticky Notes for Embedded Images and Videos

n8n has added Markdown support to sticky notes in its workflow canvas, allowing teams to embed images and YouTube videos directly alongside their automation logic.

The update transforms sticky notes from plain text annotations into rich documentation surfaces. Users can now insert visual assets inline using standard Markdown syntax, turning workflow diagrams into more comprehensive technical documentation. A screenshot shared on LinkedIn shows a production workflow for sending welcome emails to participants in n8n Sessions workshops, with embedded visuals explaining the process flow.

Documentation Without Leaving the Canvas

The feature addresses a common workflow development challenge: keeping context and documentation synchronized with automation logic. Rather than maintaining separate wiki pages or README files, teams can now document API responses, expected data structures, or conditional logic directly in the workflow where it applies.

Markdown support means sticky notes can display formatted text, code blocks, hyperlinks, and now embedded media. For workflows that process image data or trigger video content, developers can show examples of expected inputs or outputs without switching tools. A team building a YouTube content moderation workflow, for instance, could embed sample videos directly in the canvas to illustrate edge cases.

The change builds on n8n's approach to technical workflow automation, which combines a visual interface with full code extensibility. Teams already use sticky notes to explain complex node configurations or document API quirks; Markdown adds a layer of visual reference that can reduce onboarding time for new developers joining a project.

Use Cases Beyond Documentation

While documentation is the obvious application, embedded media opens other possibilities. Product teams could use workflows as living specification documents, with sticky notes showing UI mockups or user flow diagrams pulled from Figma or design tools. Support teams might embed troubleshooting videos that explain how to debug specific workflow branches.

The feature also supports workflows that serve as internal tools or dashboards. A marketing automation workflow could display current campaign creative assets inline, giving operators visual confirmation they are working with the correct version before triggering emails through Mailchimp or ConvertKit.

n8n competes with platforms like Zapier and Make in the workflow automation space, but differentiates through its self-hosted option and code-first extensibility. Markdown sticky notes fit that positioning by treating workflows as technical artifacts that benefit from rich annotation, not just drag-and-drop simplicity.

The update is available now in n8n's cloud and self-hosted versions. Teams can start using Markdown in sticky notes immediately by inserting standard syntax for images and video embeds into any workflow canvas.
