MailerLite has added a free toggle to its Digital Products feature, creating a faster path for creators to turn files and resources into lead magnets. The update simplifies what was previously a multi-step process into a single switch.
The company announced on LinkedIn that while users could always offer free products, the new toggle creates a dedicated shortcut. The feature maintains the same interface for both paid products and free resources, keeping the management experience consistent regardless of pricing.
Stripe Connection Still Required
Despite the free toggle, users still need to connect a Stripe account to use Digital Products. MailerLite confirmed this requirement remains in place even for free offerings. The dependency on payment infrastructure for free products may seem counterintuitive, but it allows the platform to maintain a unified system for all digital product transactions and potential future monetization.
The requirement ensures users are set up for both free and paid offerings from the start, avoiding the need to configure payments later when they're ready to sell. However, it does create an additional onboarding step for creators who only want to offer free resources.
Positioning Against Competitors
The update addresses a common creator workflow: using free downloads to build email lists. Platforms like ConvertKit and Gumroad have long offered streamlined approaches to this model. MailerLite's implementation keeps free and paid products in the same system, which could appeal to creators who want to manage everything in one place.
The Digital Products toolkit represents MailerLite's push beyond pure email marketing. By handling file delivery, access management, and lead capture alongside email campaigns, the platform is competing more directly with creator economy tools. The free toggle specifically targets the lead magnet use case, where creators trade valuable content for email addresses.
For creators already using MailerLite's other features, including custom reports and automation testing, the free toggle creates a tighter integration between list growth and email nurture sequences. The workflow is straightforward: upload a resource, flip the free toggle, embed the signup form, and route new subscribers into an automated welcome sequence.
The feature is available now through the MailerLite Digital Products dashboard. Users need an active MailerLite account and connected Stripe account to access the functionality.
