New Brand, New Media Library
Descript announced on its changelog a major refresh that goes beyond surface-level design changes. The company has overhauled its brand colors, shipped a long-requested media library at the drive level, added preview functionality to its Underlord AI assistant, and improved accessibility across its interface.
The brand refresh includes a shift toward redder hues and updated colors throughout the app. More importantly, Descript audited and improved contrast across the entire interface to meet WCAG 2.0 compliance standards. The previous palette failed compliance in several areas, particularly for users with color vision deficiencies. The new palette aims to improve legibility for all users.
Drive-Level Media Library Arrives
The most significant update is the introduction of a centralized Media Library in Drive view. Users can now upload and organize videos, images, and audio files at the drive level, making it easier to reuse media across multiple projects without re-uploading or re-transcribing.
The library supports:
- Direct uploads of video, image, and audio files to your drive
- Folder-based organization
- Adding media from the library to any project
- Search by filename
- Filtering by media type or files you've added
When you add media from the library to a project, it uses media minutes for transcription only once. Files uploaded directly into individual projects won't appear in the Media Library, only files uploaded to the library itself. Users can still import files from other projects using the existing Import from Other Projects option in the Project sidebar.
This addresses a workflow pain point for teams managing multiple projects with shared assets. As we previously covered, the feature has been one of the most requested additions to the platform.
Underlord Gets Preview Mode
Descript's Underlord AI assistant now shows preview options before applying audio and video generations to projects. When generating media like avatars or video clips, users can review preview results and confirm they match expectations before committing to the generation.
This change helps users avoid wasting time and credits on generations that don't meet their needs. Previously, Underlord would apply changes directly, requiring users to undo and regenerate if results weren't satisfactory.
The updates arrive as Descript continues to expand its AI capabilities. The company recently added GPT-5.4 to Underlord's model picker, giving users more control over which AI model powers their editing workflows.
Accessibility and Interface Improvements
Beyond the visible brand changes, Descript's accessibility improvements mark a meaningful step toward inclusive design. WCAG 2.0 compliance ensures that users with various visual impairments can navigate the interface more effectively. The company acknowledges a few known issues are still being resolved and encourages users to flag anything that looks off through their support chat.
The updates reflect Descript's focus on both power-user features like the Media Library and foundational improvements like accessibility. For teams using Notion for documentation or Airtable for project tracking, the centralized media library offers a similar organizational paradigm for multimedia assets within Descript's ecosystem.
