Descript Rolls Out Media Library After Years of User Requests
Descript has shipped its Media Library, a centralized asset repository that allows users to upload and reuse audio, video, and graphics across every project without re-importing files. Announced on LinkedIn, the feature addresses a longstanding pain point for video editors and podcast producers who regularly hunt through project folders for recurring assets like intro tracks, branded elements, and B-roll.
The library lives at the drive level, meaning any media uploaded there is automatically shared with everyone on a user's team. Files can be organized into folders, filtered by media type, and added to any project with a click. When media from the library is inserted into a new composition, Descript transcribes it once and deducts media minutes accordingly, but subsequent uses across projects don't require re-uploading or additional processing time.
How It Works
Users access the Media Library through a dedicated tab in the left sidebar of Descript's home page. From there, they can:
- Upload videos, images, and audio directly to their drive
- Organize files in folders for easier retrieval
- Add media to any project without importing duplicates
- Search by filename or filter by media type
Files imported directly into individual projects won't appear in the library. Those assets remain project-specific unless manually uploaded to the shared repository. Descript still supports importing from other projects via its existing Import from other projects workflow, which remains separate from the new library system.
The update also includes preview functionality for Underlord, Descript's AI-powered editing assistant. Users can now preview audio and video results before Underlord applies them to a project, reducing wasted credits on unwanted generations. When generating avatars or video clips, Underlord displays preview options so editors can confirm outputs before committing.
Why It Matters
For teams producing content at scale, the Media Library eliminates redundant file management. Editors no longer need to ask colleagues for logo files over Slack, dig through dated project folders, or export and re-import the same intro sequence across dozens of episodes. Everything used regularly lives in one shared location.
The feature is particularly useful for podcasters and video producers with recurring branding elements, such as network stingers, sponsor segments, or standard call-to-action overlays. Since transcription and upload happen once, teams also conserve media minutes on paid plans.
Descript's changelog confirms the Media Library is now live in the drive view. The company has also refreshed its interface colors to meet WCAG 2.0 compliance standards, improving contrast and legibility for users with color vision deficiencies. The update shifts the app's palette toward redder tones, with brand colors updated across all surfaces.
