Descript has updated its video editing workflow to let creators correct spoken errors by typing replacements directly into the transcript, eliminating the need for reshoots.
The feature, highlighted in a recent LinkedIn post, addresses a common friction point in video production. When a creator misspeaks a word on camera, the traditional fix requires returning to the studio and re-recording the entire take. Descript's approach instead lets users highlight the incorrect word in the transcript and type a replacement, which the platform then synthesizes to match the speaker's voice and timing.
How It Works
The workflow builds on Descript's text-based editing model, where audio and video are represented as editable transcripts. When a user types a new word in place of the original, Descript generates a voice clone of the speaker pronouncing the correction. The synthesized audio integrates into the timeline, maintaining lip-sync and pacing without requiring manual alignment.
This capability extends Descript's existing voice synthesis tools, which the company has developed under its Overdub feature. Overdub allows users to create a digital copy of their voice for corrections and additions, though it requires an initial voice training process. The new on-camera correction feature appears to leverage similar technology, applying it directly to video workflows where visual continuity matters.
Impact on Video Production
The update reduces the time and logistical overhead of fixing small errors in video content. For creators producing tutorials, presentations, or social media videos, the ability to patch mistakes in post-production without re-recording can compress production cycles. It also lowers the barrier for solo creators who lack access to studios or crew for retakes.
Descript has been expanding its AI-driven editing tools steadily. The company recently added Claude Opus 4.7 to its Underlord assistant for faster video editing and shipped a centralized media library to streamline asset management across projects. The on-camera correction feature fits into this broader strategy of reducing manual editing tasks through automation.
The feature is available now in Descript's video editor. Users can access it by highlighting misspoken words in the transcript and typing replacements, which the platform synthesizes and integrates into the video timeline.
