Descript Adds Claude Opus 4.8 Workflows to Underlord AI Assistant

Descript is rolling out natural language workflows inside Underlord, its AI editing assistant, using Claude Opus 4.8 to automate complex multi-step edits. A recent demo showed a user asking Underlord to cut a two-hour video down to only the best takes, generate chapter markers, and strip out silences longer than two seconds.

The update builds on Descript's existing Underlord feature, which previously added Claude Opus 4.8 for more deliberate editing decisions. This new capability chains multiple editing actions into a single prompt, reducing the need for manual timeline work on long-form content.

How the workflow approach changes editing

Instead of executing discrete commands, Underlord now interprets requests that combine editorial judgment with technical tasks. The example workflow involves three distinct operations: evaluating takes for quality, inserting structural markers, and applying silence removal with a custom threshold. Each step typically requires separate tool passes or manual review.

The feature appears designed for creators working with raw recordings that need both structural cleanup and content curation. Podcasters, interviewers, and course creators often face hours of footage where identifying strong segments is as time-consuming as technical trimming.

Context pinning and chat history improvements

Descript also updated Underlord's interface to support more complex requests. Users can now pin specific scenes, timestamps, or layers directly to a prompt using an @ symbol, giving the AI precise scope instead of relying on verbal descriptions. This is most useful in projects with dozens of clips where "the intro" or "that section" becomes ambiguous.

Chat history now persists across sessions. Previously, refreshing the page or switching projects wiped conversations; now Underlord remembers context and past instructions. Conversations are per-user and per-project, synced across devices, and accessible in reverse chronological order. Older chats remain viewable but read-only.

These updates arrived during Descript's Telethon event in May 2026, which focused on fixing daily editing annoyances and fulfilling user feature requests. The team streamed live demos, bug fixes, and interviews as part of a hackathon-style showcase.

What this means for video editors

The shift toward workflow-based prompts suggests Descript is moving Underlord from a command interface to something closer to an editing co-pilot. Instead of asking for one action at a time, users can describe an outcome and let the AI determine the sequence.

That raises questions about reliability. Multi-step automations depend on each step succeeding, and AI judgment calls on "best takes" may not align with editorial intent without clear criteria. Descript has not detailed how Underlord evaluates take quality or whether users can define custom rules for selection.

For teams already using Descript's Workspaces feature, the persistent chat history and context pinning could streamline handoffs. Editors can document their Underlord requests and reasoning, making it easier for collaborators to understand automated changes.

The feature is available now inside Descript's web and desktop apps. Users can access Claude Opus 4.8 workflows through the Underlord panel in any project. Pricing details for compute-heavy operations were not disclosed.
