Vibe Coding

Vibe coding refers to a development approach where you chat with AI coding assistants in natural language, focusing on what you want rather than writing code yourself. AI does the technical work; while you riff on your ideas.

Where did the phrase come from

Well...so Andrey Karpathy was previously the director of AI at Tesla and now he builds weekend projects. His youtube channel is neat. He tweeted this in February:

🤔 Why is it important right now?

AI coding tools like Cursor, Replit Agent, Bolt, and Lovable have advanced to the point where they can understand vague instructions and translate them into functioning applications. This shift allows non-programmers to build software by simply describing what they want in conversational language.

Real-World Example:

People are now building apps from poolside or in bed on their phones, on toilets with little to no coding knowledge required.

😊 What you need to know as a non-techie?

💻 Intuitive Development: Describe changes like "make this look better" or "decrease the padding" and AI implements them

🔄 Error Handling: Just copy-paste error messages back to AI without analysis

⚡ Rapid Iteration: Tell AI what to change and let it handle the implementation

🚀 Where to start

Try tools like Replit Agent and Lovable for complete non-coders, while those with some coding experience might prefer Cursor or Windsurf. The key is to start with a rough idea and let AI build it out, then refine through conversation rather than writing syntax.

Here's a video from February where Kieran built an app using Lovable without knowing he was "vibe coding".

🔊 On your radar

Keep your finger on the pulse on what's hot in the space right now

⭐️ Manus has been released - an autonomous agent that can analyze, plan, and execute tasks on its own.

👉 It appears to be a combination of "Deep research", "Operator" and with the most performant models baked in". It's in closed beta and you can apply here

⭐️ European (French) AI startup model builder Mistral has made a big hoo har about it's new OCR model. Accessible by API from one of your favourite tools

👉 With 90% of the world’s organisational data still stored as documents, this might be the opportunity hiding in plain site.

⭐️ Gregory John and BuildCamp 2.0 is pivoting to building app with AI (not NoCode)

👉 Is this a signal that nocode tools are dead or a reminder that technology is always changing. WeWeb 3.0 and Bubble AI builder show they are adapting. But it is fast enough

I just built a *functioning* React app by describing what I wanted to GPT-3. I'm still in awe.
