Zapier is testing a new AI-powered assistant called Shared Brain that pulls information from multiple connected apps to answer complex questions and generate reports. The product, currently in closed beta, represents a shift from traditional chatbots to an AI system that understands context across a user's entire workflow.
According to a LinkedIn post from Philip Lakin, a Zapier employee, the tool reduced what would normally be hours of manual data gathering to roughly three minutes. Lakin described receiving a request from his manager for a comprehensive update on AI transformation programs, including quantitative metrics, qualitative insights, and adoption data spread across multiple systems.
Cross-Platform Context Synthesis
Shared Brain accepts natural language prompts and queries data across tools like Slack, Gmail, CRM systems, call recordings, event notes, and spreadsheets. In Lakin's example, he asked the system to analyze April metrics, identify what moved the needle, surface bright spots, and flag friction points for upcoming months.
The assistant then compiled the information and generated a Google Slides deck. Lakin noted that the output required no revision, describing it as "exec-ready" on the first pass.
The emphasis on secure access to actual workflow tools differentiates this approach from standalone AI chat interfaces. Rather than requiring users to manually feed context into a chatbot, Shared Brain is designed to understand where information lives and retrieve it automatically.
Strategic Shift Toward Ambient Intelligence
This launch follows Zapier's recent moves to embed automation capabilities directly into AI development environments. The company previously launched a one-click integration for installing automation into AI tools, and released an SDK for builders to execute integrations from AI coding tools like Cursor and Replit.
Shared Brain appears to target a different use case: knowledge workers who need to synthesize scattered information rather than build workflows. The product competes in a space where tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity offer conversational interfaces but typically lack direct integration with proprietary business tools.
The closed beta is available through a waitlist on Zapier's website. No public timeline for general availability has been announced.
Implications for Business Workflows
If Shared Brain delivers on its promise at scale, it could reduce the time knowledge workers spend context-switching between apps and manually aggregating data. Common tasks like preparing board updates, compiling project status reports, or analyzing customer feedback across channels could shift from multi-hour exercises to prompted requests.
The success of the product will likely depend on accuracy, hallucination rates, and how well the system handles edge cases where data is incomplete or contradictory. Lakin's anecdote describes a best-case scenario, but real-world performance across diverse workflows and data quality levels remains to be seen.
Zapier has not disclosed pricing, whether Shared Brain will be a standalone product or bundled with existing plans, or how it will handle data privacy and compliance requirements for enterprise customers.
