Xano Connects Claude Code to Backend Workspaces via CLI and Developer MCP
Xano has integrated Claude Code directly into its backend platform, allowing developers to generate, validate, and deploy API logic through an AI-assisted workflow. The integration uses Xano's command-line interface and Developer Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect Claude's code generation capabilities with live backend workspaces.
The company announced the integration on LinkedIn, positioning it as a way to build backends with greater confidence by connecting AI tooling directly to production infrastructure. According to the post, developers can now use Claude Code to interact with their Xano workspace through a terminal interface, removing the manual translation step between AI-generated code and deployed backend logic.
The Developer MCP acts as a bridge between Claude's language model and Xano's API management layer. When a developer describes a backend function or workflow in natural language, Claude Code can query the workspace schema, generate function stacks, and validate the logic against existing data structures before deployment. This allows AI to work within the constraints of an actual backend environment rather than generating code in isolation.
How the CLI Integration Works
Xano's CLI provides programmatic access to workspace resources, including database schemas, API endpoints, and function stacks. By exposing these through MCP, Claude Code can read existing backend configurations, understand relationships between data tables, and generate logic that aligns with the workspace's current state.
Developers authenticate the CLI with their Xano account, select a workspace, and then prompt Claude Code with backend requirements. The AI agent can list available tables, inspect field types, and suggest function implementations that respect existing data validation rules. Once generated, the logic can be pushed directly to the workspace using CLI commands, eliminating the need to copy-paste code between interfaces.
This workflow is particularly relevant following Xano's recent launch of sandbox environments, which allow developers to test AI-generated logic in isolated instances before deploying to production. The CLI can target sandbox workspaces, enabling developers to validate Claude's output in a safe environment.
Developer MCP as Infrastructure for AI Agents
The Developer MCP is part of Xano's broader effort to make backend infrastructure accessible to AI agents. Model Context Protocol is an emerging standard that allows language models to interact with external systems through structured APIs. By implementing MCP, Xano enables Claude Code and other AI tools to treat backend workspaces as queryable, modifiable resources rather than static documentation.
This approach differs from traditional code generation tools that output snippets developers must manually integrate. Instead, Claude Code operates as an agent with direct workspace access, capable of reading existing logic, identifying gaps, and deploying updates through a single command-line session. The integration also supports validation checks, so the AI can verify that generated functions compile correctly and match expected input-output signatures before deployment.
Xano has been expanding its AI tooling over the past several months, including CLI and MCP integrations in version 2.3 and JavaScript lambda support with Deno runtime. The Claude Code integration builds on these capabilities by connecting a widely used AI coding assistant to Xano's backend infrastructure.
Availability and Documentation
The Claude Code integration is available now to all Xano users with CLI access. Full setup documentation is accessible through the company's resource link provided in the announcement. Developers need to install the Xano CLI, configure authentication credentials, and enable MCP support in their Claude Code environment to begin using the integration.
Xano starts at $25 per month for hosted backend infrastructure, with CLI access included in all paid plans. The Developer MCP does not require additional licensing fees beyond the base Xano subscription and a Claude Pro account for using Claude Code's extended capabilities.
