Xano Integrates CLI and Developer MCP With AI Agents in Version 2.3

Xano has released version 2.3 with support for AI agents to interact directly with its command-line interface and Developer Model Context Protocol. The update allows developers to use AI assistants to generate backend workflows in tools like Cursor, Windsurf, and other MCP-compatible environments without leaving their existing development setup.

The backend platform announced the integration on LinkedIn, positioning the update as a way for teams to build faster and with more confidence. The CLI and MCP tools had been introduced separately in previous releases, but version 2.3 marks their formal integration with AI agent workflows.

How It Works

The Xano CLI is a command-line tool that connects to Xano workspaces and allows developers to manage backend resources through terminal commands. The Developer MCP extends this by providing a structured protocol that AI agents can use to understand and manipulate Xano projects. When combined, AI assistants can now read existing backend configurations, suggest new endpoints, modify database schemas, and generate business logic without manual intervention.

Developers install the CLI with npm install -g @xano/cli and configure it to authenticate with their workspace. Once connected, MCP-enabled AI tools can query the backend structure, propose changes, and execute them through the CLI. This reduces context switching between Xano's visual editor and code-based environments.

The integration is documented in Xano's CLI guide, which covers profile setup, workspace connections, and team workflows. The CLI already supported manual operations like pushing and pulling changes, managing branches, and deploying releases. The MCP layer adds semantic understanding so AI agents can interpret natural language requests and translate them into CLI commands.

What This Means for Backend Development

The update addresses a common friction point for developers who use visual backend tools but prefer working in code editors. By enabling AI agents to bridge these environments, Xano is betting that teams will adopt agentic workflows where AI handles repetitive tasks like CRUD endpoint generation, schema migrations, and boilerplate logic.

This follows Xano's broader push into AI-assisted development, which included workspace-wide AI builds and visual diffs in earlier updates. The CLI and MCP integration extends that capability beyond Xano's own interface into third-party tools.

The approach is similar to how Supabase and Replit have integrated AI into their platforms, though Xano's focus remains on no-code and low-code backend logic rather than full-stack application hosting. The CLI-first approach also aligns with developer expectations around version control, CI/CD, and collaborative workflows that visual editors typically struggle to support.

Availability and Adoption

The Xano CLI and Developer MCP are available now to all Xano users. The CLI is distributed via npm and requires Node.js 16 or later. The MCP protocol works with any AI tool that supports the Model Context Protocol standard, including Claude desktop, Cursor, and compatible agents built on OpenAI or Anthropic APIs.

Xano has not disclosed usage metrics for the CLI or MCP adoption rates, but the company's recent blog posts suggest a growing focus on enterprise teams and developer-led workflows. Version 2.3 also includes updates to sandbox environments and AI governance features, as previously reported.

The backend platform starts at $25 per month for individual developers, with enterprise plans available for teams requiring multi-tenant deployments, custom scaling, and compliance certifications. The CLI and MCP features are included at all pricing tiers.
