Tally Forms Launches Formula Editor for Advanced Calculated Fields

Tally Forms announced on LinkedIn a new formula editor that brings spreadsheet-style expressions to its calculated field blocks. The update lets form builders write complex, multi-step calculations in a single formula instead of chaining separate logic blocks together.

The formula editor supports field references using @ mentions, concatenation of text strings, and real-time validation that flags errors as you type. According to the changelog entry, users can now combine multiple operations in one expression, a shift from the previous workflow that required separate calculated field blocks for each step in a calculation.

How the Formula Editor Works

The editor functions like a lightweight version of spreadsheet formulas. Users can reference any form field by typing @ followed by the field name, which triggers an autocomplete menu. Once selected, the field becomes part of the expression and updates dynamically when respondents fill out the form.

Real-time validation checks syntax as users build their formulas. If an operation is invalid or a field reference is broken, the editor highlights the issue immediately, eliminating the guesswork that came with debugging multi-step calculated fields after the fact.

Text concatenation is also supported, meaning builders can combine strings with field values to create formatted outputs like custom messages, reference numbers, or pre-filled text blocks. This is particularly useful for confirmation screens, email templates, or forms that generate unique IDs based on user input.

Why This Matters for Form Builders

Before this update, creating multi-step calculations in Tally required adding multiple calculated field blocks and carefully ordering them so each step fed into the next. That approach worked, but it was tedious to maintain and hard to troubleshoot when something broke.

The formula editor collapses that workflow into a single block. A calculation that previously required three or four chained fields can now be written as one expression, making forms easier to build and faster to debug.

For users building pricing calculators, conditional logic flows, or dynamic reports inside forms, this significantly reduces setup time. The feature is available now across all Tally plans, including the free tier.

The formula editor arrives shortly after Tally added font search capabilities and PDF export links for integrations, part of a broader push to give the form builder more depth without sacrificing its signature simplicity.

Technical Details and Availability

The formula editor is live in the form builder under calculated field blocks. Users can access it by adding a calculated field and selecting the new formula mode. The help documentation includes a full list of supported operators, functions, and syntax rules.

Tally continues to compete directly with Typeform, Jotform, and Google Forms by offering unlimited forms and submissions on its free plan while adding enterprise-grade features like calculated fields, conditional logic, and integrations with Zapier and Make. The bootstrapped company runs monthly office hours where users can ask founders Marie and Filip questions directly, a practice that has shaped much of its product roadmap.
