Notion announced its Developer Platform today, a suite of tools that lets developers build custom integrations, sync external data sources, and create specialized tools for AI agents directly within Notion workspaces.
The platform centers on three core capabilities: Workers for running hosted code, declarative data syncs for continuous updates from external systems, and custom tools that extend what Notion's AI agents can do. According to the official blog post, the goal is to turn Notion into a programmable workspace where teams can bring in data from any source and orchestrate AI-driven workflows without leaving the platform.
Workers and Syncs Bring External Data In
The platform's Workers runtime lets developers write TypeScript code that runs on Notion's infrastructure. These workers can execute on schedules or in response to events, handling tasks like data syncing, transformations, or API calls.
One key use case is syncing external records into Notion databases. Developers define a schema, set a sync schedule, and write logic to upsert records from tools like Zendesk or Linear. The system maintains a persistent cursor, so syncs only process new or updated records. A sample sync might pull support tickets every five minutes, mapping fields like CSAT scores and feature tags into Notion's select and multi-select properties.

Notion provides a CLI for local development and testing, with built-in TypeScript support and Zod for schema validation. As previously covered, this marks a shift from webhook-based integrations to a model where Notion hosts and manages the code.
Custom Tools for AI Agents
The platform also introduces a tool SDK that lets developers write custom functions for Notion's AI agents. These tools can query live data, generate assets, or interact with external APIs.
One example from the documentation: a tool that reads a Notion page, converts its content to markdown, and generates a PowerPoint presentation. The tool uses the Notion API to fetch page blocks, parses headings into slides, and uploads the resulting file back to the page. Agents can invoke these tools autonomously when users ask them to complete tasks that require external services or custom logic.
Companies like OpenAI, Figma, and Ramp are already using the platform, according to the announcement.
Declarative Schema and Managed Databases
Developers define database schemas using a declarative API. When a worker references a database that doesn't exist, Notion creates it automatically with the specified properties and initial title. This "managed" database mode ensures the schema stays in sync with the code, reducing manual setup.
Properties map to Notion's native types: title, select, multi-select, date, and more. The platform handles type conversions and validation, so developers work with structured data rather than raw API responses.
Broader Platform Ambitions
This launch follows Notion's recent expansion into AI orchestration, where external agents can be integrated into Notion workflows. Together, these capabilities position Notion as a hub for both human collaboration and AI-assisted work.
The Developer Platform is available now. Full documentation and examples are live at developers.notion.com, and a keynote video walks through the core features and demos.
