Notion has rolled out a significant update to its Custom Agents, allowing them to access a company's People directory. The feature, announced on LinkedIn, gives agents organizational context that could make automated workflows more useful.
Understanding Team Structure
The update addresses a fundamental limitation in agent-based automation: context about people. Custom Agents can now be granted access to view a company's internal People directory, which typically includes employee names, roles, departments, and reporting structures.
This means agents can answer questions like who manages a specific project, which team member handles particular responsibilities, or how teams are organized. For companies already using Notion's Custom Agents feature, this adds a layer of organizational intelligence that was previously missing.
The capability builds on Notion's broader push into AI-powered automation. Following their recent launch of Claude Fable 5 for complex multi-step workflows, the platform has been steadily expanding what Custom Agents can access and understand.
Practical Applications
The People directory integration opens several practical use cases. An agent handling customer support requests could automatically route issues to the right team based on department structure. A meeting scheduling agent could understand reporting relationships when booking 1-on-1s. Knowledge management agents could tag the correct subject matter experts when processing documentation requests.
For teams that have built agents using Notion's Developer Platform, the directory access can be incorporated into custom tools and syncs. The platform already supports building agents that query external data sources and generate assets, as detailed in their recent platform announcement.
Access and Privacy Considerations
The feature requires explicit permission, meaning workspace administrators must grant directory access to each Custom Agent. This follows the principle that agents should only access information they need to perform their specific function.
Notion has not disclosed whether there are granular controls for what parts of the directory an agent can see, such as limiting access to specific departments or fields. The company also has not detailed how this data is used in agent training or whether directory information remains within the workspace's data boundaries.
The update arrives as companies increasingly deploy multiple agents for different workflows. Organizations like Rakuten France have built 80 agents with a four-person team using Notion's platform, suggesting demand for features that make agents more contextually aware.
The People directory integration is available now for Notion workspaces using Custom Agents. The company has not announced pricing changes related to the feature.
