PhysicsWallah Triples Student Engagement With ElevenLabs Voice AI Tutor

PhysicsWallah Integrates Voice AI for 36 Million Students

PhysicsWallah, an edtech platform preparing over 36 million students across India for competitive and government entrance exams, has upgraded its Ask AI doubt-solving tool with voice capabilities powered by ElevenLabs. The integration addresses a critical gap: 52% of students learn better through audio, making a text-only tool inadequate for half the user base.

The voice AI tutor now supports native Hinglish, matching the way students naturally speak and ask questions. Early data shows students who engage with voice features generate 3x more queries per session compared to non-voice users and demonstrate 2.4x higher retention at the 15-day mark.

PhysicsWallah's move reflects a broader shift in edtech toward multimodal learning experiences. The platform serves students across India's diverse linguistic landscape, where code-switching between Hindi and English is common in everyday conversation. Supporting Hinglish allows the AI tutor to meet learners where they are, rather than forcing them into formal language patterns that may feel unnatural or intimidating.

Voice as a Retention Lever

The retention and engagement metrics suggest voice interaction removes friction for a significant portion of learners. Students who prefer auditory learning can now ask follow-up questions, clarify concepts, and iterate on problems without typing, making the tutoring experience more conversational and less transactional.

PhysicsWallah has not disclosed whether the voice feature is available across all subscription tiers or how it handles accent variation and regional dialects within Hinglish. The company also has not detailed whether the voice AI uses ElevenLabs' text-to-speech models, conversational agents, or both.

ElevenLabs has been expanding its voice AI capabilities across industries and geographies. The company recently launched Dubbing v2, preserving tone and emotion across 90+ languages, and announced Music v2 with improved vocals and a 50% price cut. The platform has also partnered with governments, including a memorandum of understanding with the UK Government to bring voice AI to public services.

What This Means for Edtech

PhysicsWallah's integration demonstrates how voice AI can serve as more than a novelty feature. When matched to user preferences and language patterns, it becomes a retention and engagement tool. For platforms targeting non-English-speaking or multilingual audiences, supporting code-switching and regional variations may prove essential.

The 3x query increase suggests students are more willing to ask multiple follow-up questions when using voice, a behavior that could lead to deeper conceptual understanding. Whether that translates to better exam performance remains to be seen, but higher engagement and retention are early indicators of product-market fit for voice-enabled tutoring.

ElevenLabs has not disclosed pricing details for enterprise integrations like PhysicsWallah's, but the company crossed $500 million in annual recurring revenue in May 2026, attracting investors including BlackRock and NVIDIA. The company's API supports developers building voice features into applications, with documentation available for text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and conversational agents.

PhysicsWallah's case study will likely draw attention from other edtech platforms, particularly in markets where English is not the primary language of instruction. As voice AI costs decline and model quality improves, the barrier to adding conversational interfaces continues to drop.
