Airtable is testing a new way to turn an existing base into a working application without making users assemble the interface or reconnect their data. Canvas, unveiled during the company’s Summer Camp event, generates apps, dashboards and reports from a plain-language description, using live records as its foundation.
The company says the result is not simply another view or a disconnected prototype. Canvas is designed to produce a functional, branded application that teams can share and use against their existing Airtable data.
That starting point matters. Many AI app builders generate an interface first, leaving users to configure databases, map fields and establish connections afterward. Canvas reverses the process by starting with the structure already present in an Airtable base.
From Base to Application
A user can describe the interface they need, such as a project dashboard, operational report or internal app. Canvas then builds it around the base’s records and fields. According to Airtable’s announcement on LinkedIn, the generated application also follows changes made to those fields, reducing the need to manually rewire the interface as the underlying data model evolves.
For small businesses, that could shorten a familiar build process. A company already tracking customers, inventory or content production in Airtable could ask Canvas to create a purpose-built interface for colleagues without first exporting the data or rebuilding its schema elsewhere.
The approach appears intended to cover several practical outputs:
- Internal apps based on operational records
- Dashboards that present live business information
- Reports assembled from existing fields and data
- Branded interfaces that can be shared with a team

Canvas also fits into Airtable’s broader effort to make application building more conversational. The company previously introduced Cobuilder as a way to create no-code apps with AI, according to its official blog. More recently, Airtable has expanded AI-assisted workflow creation, including MCP server automation creation.
Canvas sharpens that strategy around an existing base. Instead of treating data integration as a later stage of app development, it makes the base itself the specification from which the application is generated.
An Early Enterprise-Tested Release
Canvas is not yet presented as a finished, generally available product. Airtable describes the release as an early look and says access is rolling out in waves through Airtable Labs, its environment for experimental features.
The company also says teams at some of its largest enterprise customers have been using Canvas for months. Feedback from those customers is shaping much of the roadmap, although Airtable has not disclosed which additions are planned or when broader access will arrive.
That early status leaves some important questions unanswered. Airtable has not announced pricing, plan requirements or a timetable for general availability. It has also not detailed the extent to which users can edit generated applications, control branding or manage permissions beyond the existing sharing language in the announcement.
Still, the direction is clear. Airtable wants AI-generated software to begin with a company’s real operational data rather than a blank prompt and an empty database. If Canvas can reliably adapt as schemas change, it could remove one of the more tedious parts of no-code development: keeping an application aligned with the source data that powers it.
Frequently asked questions
What is Airtable Canvas?
Airtable Canvas is an experimental app-building feature that creates working apps, dashboards and reports from a plain-language description. It builds directly on live data in an existing Airtable base and is intended to reflect changes to the base’s fields.
Who is Airtable Canvas for?
Canvas is aimed at teams that already manage operational data in Airtable and want to turn it into a shareable, branded interface. Airtable says teams at some large enterprise customers have tested the feature, but the underlying workflow could also apply to smaller organizations building internal tools and reports.
When is Airtable Canvas available, and what does it cost?
Canvas is available through Airtable Labs, with access rolling out in waves. Airtable has not announced general availability, pricing or specific plan requirements.
