Tally Forms Now Attaches Submission PDFs to Email Notifications

Tally Forms has added a new option to automatically attach form submissions as PDFs to email notifications. The update lets users deliver submissions in a ready-to-share format without requiring manual exports or extra steps.

The feature, announced on LinkedIn, works by enabling a single checkbox in the notification settings. Once activated, every form submission sent via email includes a clean PDF attachment using the form's existing theme and layout.

Streamlining Submission Workflows

Email notifications are a common way to route form responses to team members, clients, or stakeholders. Until now, recipients who needed a formatted copy had to log into Tally, locate the submission, and export it manually. The new PDF attachment removes that friction entirely.

The PDF format is particularly useful for:

  • Contracts and agreements that require signatures or archiving
  • Order confirmations sent to customers or vendors
  • Survey responses shared with non-technical stakeholders
  • Event registrations forwarded to operations teams

Because the PDF uses the form's existing design, branding and layout remain consistent across all submissions. There's no need to configure a separate template or adjust styling.

Part of a Broader PDF Push

This update builds on Tally's recent addition of one-click PDF exports, which let users download any submission as a formatted PDF from the Tally dashboard. That feature launched in late April alongside collapsible pages for multi-page form editing.

While the dashboard export is useful for ad-hoc sharing, the email attachment option automates delivery for workflows where notifications are already in use. For teams managing high volumes of submissions, such as event organizers or customer service departments, the difference is meaningful. Instead of logging in to export each PDF individually, recipients now receive formatted copies in their inbox as soon as a form is submitted.

The feature is available to all Tally users at no additional cost. Forms with email notifications enabled can activate PDF attachments by navigating to notification settings and selecting the new checkbox. No changes to existing forms or integrations are required.

Competing With Established Players

Tally competes in a crowded form builder market dominated by tools like Typeform, Jotform, and Google Forms. While those platforms offer robust feature sets, Tally has differentiated itself by offering unlimited forms and submissions on its free plan, a model that has attracted solo builders and small teams.

PDF generation is not unique to Tally; Jotform has long offered configurable PDF templates, and Typeform supports PDF downloads via third-party integrations. However, Tally's approach prioritizes simplicity over customization. There are no template editors or conditional formatting options. The PDF mirrors the form's existing design, which reduces setup time but limits flexibility for users who need tailored documents.

For teams that prioritize speed and ease of use over granular control, the trade-off may be acceptable. For those requiring advanced PDF customization, tools like Jotform or Zapier integrations with document generators remain better suited.

The update continues Tally's pattern of incremental, user-requested improvements. Co-founders Marie Martens and Filip Minev have built the tool without venture funding, relying on word-of-mouth growth and a freemium model. The team hosts regular Office Hours sessions where users can request features or discuss workflows directly with the founders. The next session is scheduled for May 21 at 4 PM CEST.

For now, the PDF attachment feature is live and accessible to all users. Teams looking to reduce manual export steps or streamline submission sharing can enable it immediately from their notification settings.
