PostHog Expands Error Monitoring With Scouts for CSP Violations and Web Vitals
PostHog has expanded its automated monitoring capabilities with new "scouts" that detect Content Security Policy violations, Web Vitals issues, and React performance problems. The additions, announced on LinkedIn by engineer Paul D'Ambra, arrive through recent merged pull requests and extend the open-source analytics platform's ability to surface frontend issues before they impact users.
Scouts act as automated watchers within PostHog's error tracking system, designed to flag specific categories of problems without manual configuration. The CSP violation scout monitors when resources are blocked by security policies, typically caused by inline scripts, unauthorized third-party resources, or misconfigured directives. The Web Vitals scout tracks Core Web Vitals metrics like Largest Contentful Paint, First Input Delay, and Cumulative Layout Shift, which directly affect search rankings and user experience. The React performance scout identifies component render issues, unnecessary re-renders, and inefficient hook usage.
"They're the robot boss," D'Ambra noted, suggesting the scouts operate as an autonomous monitoring layer that surfaces actionable issues to development teams. The feature builds on PostHog's existing session replay and product analytics capabilities, which let teams investigate user behavior alongside technical errors.

The timing follows PostHog's recent expansion into developer tooling. The company launched an AI-powered setup wizard that automates SDK installation and configuration, and introduced a Slack app that allows non-technical team members to ship code changes directly from chat. The scout system appears designed to complement these automation features by reducing the manual overhead of monitoring production environments.
PostHog competes with specialized tools like Sentry for error tracking and Google Analytics for web metrics, but positions itself as a unified platform combining product analytics, session replay, feature flags, and experimentation. The company has emphasized its open-source model and self-hosting options as differentiators for privacy-conscious teams.
The new scouts are available in the latest version of PostHog's JavaScript SDK. Teams using PostHog for error tracking will see CSP violations, Web Vitals degradation, and React performance issues automatically flagged in their error monitoring dashboard. The feature requires no additional configuration beyond standard PostHog installation.
D'Ambra's post hinted at additional scouts in development, though he did not specify which other error categories the team is targeting. The expandable scout architecture suggests PostHog may continue adding specialized monitors for different frameworks, security policies, or performance metrics based on common developer pain points.
