Perplexity is splitting the work inside its Computer agent between two new models. GPT 5.6 Terra is becoming the default for subagents and an optional orchestrator, while GPT 5.6 Luna will take charge of scheduled automations where speed and cost are the priorities.

The company announced the rollout on LinkedIn, positioning the two models as specialized components rather than interchangeable options. The change matters because Computer is designed to break a larger request into separate tasks, coordinate those tasks and produce a combined result. Its underlying model choices can therefore affect the cost, speed and reliability of an entire workflow.

Terra Takes On Complex Agent Work

Terra is now the default model for every Computer subagent. In an agentic system, subagents handle individual pieces of a broader job, such as conducting research, comparing information or preparing a deliverable. Perplexity describes Terra as a model built for complex, goal-oriented work, making it the heavier-duty choice in the new setup.

Users can also select Terra as an orchestrator model. The orchestrator sits above the subagents, interpreting the original goal, deciding how work should be divided and coordinating the resulting steps. Offering Terra in both roles means users can apply it either to individual tasks or to the planning layer responsible for the overall workflow.

Perplexity says Terra scores 11 points higher than Sonnet on WANDR while delivering an order-of-magnitude reduction in cost. The announcement does not provide the underlying scores, test configuration or detailed cost figures, so the comparison cannot be independently assessed from the published information. Still, it signals Perplexity’s objective: improve Computer’s ability to complete complicated work without allowing multi-agent costs to scale at the same rate.

That approach follows the company’s broader effort to make Computer a multi-model workspace. Perplexity recently added Model Council for cross-model analysis inside Computer, giving users a way to draw on different models for the same problem. Terra’s role is more operational. It is being placed directly into the machinery that plans and executes tasks.

Luna Prioritizes Repeatable Automation

Luna has a narrower mandate. It will serve as Computer’s primary model for scheduled automations, the recurring workflows that run without requiring a user to start each one manually.

Perplexity says Luna is optimized for situations where speed and cost matter. That makes it a potentially better fit for routine work than assigning every scheduled run to a model designed for maximum reasoning depth. Examples could include recurring research and monitoring jobs, although Perplexity’s announcement does not specify supported templates or use cases.

For small businesses, that division is pragmatic. A one-off strategic project may justify more compute and deeper planning, while a workflow that runs daily or weekly needs predictable economics. Model specialization lets Perplexity make that distinction within Computer instead of expecting users to choose one general-purpose model for every workload.

The release also builds on Perplexity’s expansion of Computer beyond a browser-based research experience. The company has introduced a personal Computer agent for Windows and continued adding models to its broader product. With Terra and Luna, the emphasis shifts from simply offering more model choices to automatically assigning models according to the type of work being performed.

Perplexity has not disclosed separate pricing, plan requirements or technical documentation for the two models in the announcement. Users evaluating the update should therefore watch actual completion quality, latency and usage costs across their own workflows rather than relying on the benchmark claim alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is Perplexity GPT 5.6 Terra and Luna?

GPT 5.6 Terra and Luna are two models now used within Perplexity Computer. Terra handles complex, goal-oriented subagent work and can act as an orchestrator, while Luna is the primary model for scheduled automations focused on speed and cost.

How is Terra used inside Perplexity Computer?

Terra is the default model for all Computer subagents. It is also available as an orchestrator model, allowing it to plan and coordinate a broader task as well as execute individual parts of that task.

Which Perplexity plan includes Terra and Luna?

Perplexity’s announcement says both models are live in Computer but does not identify required subscription tiers or separate pricing. No additional rollout schedule was provided.
