Netlify has redesigned its Functions platform to work seamlessly with AI coding agents, shifting configuration from filename conventions and untyped globals into typed, discoverable code. The update, announced on LinkedIn by the company, allows AI agents to configure regions, memory allocation, background jobs, and event handlers directly in code.
"The whole point is that an AI coding agent can now do things that used to require you to remember a convention," Netlify explained in the post. The changes address a core challenge in agent-driven development: AI models struggle with implicit configuration patterns that rely on file naming or global variables.
How Agent Experience Changes Functions
The new Functions interface lets agents specify configuration explicitly. Need to run a function close to European users? An agent can now set the region in a typed config object. Processing heavy machine learning inference? The agent adjusts memory allocation, and Netlify automatically scales CPU to match.
Background jobs, which previously required specific filename patterns, now work through a simple background: true flag. Event-driven functions gain typed, named handler exports instead of relying on untyped globals. As we previously covered, these changes shipped as part of a broader Functions redesign focused on cross-platform compatibility.
The improvements benefit human developers as well. Typed configuration surfaces in IDE autocomplete, reducing the need to consult documentation. When configuration lives in code rather than filenames, it becomes easier to version control, code review, and refactor.
Netlify's shift toward agent-first design follows the platform's recent work on AI Gateway and related infrastructure. The company has been measuring and optimizing for what it calls "Agent Experience," detailed in a companion blog post that outlines their approach to AX metrics.
Practical Implications
Developers working with AI coding assistants like Cursor or Claude will notice the difference immediately. Instead of prompting "create a background function in the background-jobs folder with the right naming pattern," developers can now say "make this a background job" and let the agent set the configuration flag.
The typed handler exports for events like user signups or form submissions remove another layer of implicit knowledge. Agents can discover available event types through TypeScript definitions rather than parsing documentation or examples.
Netlify joins other platforms like Vercel and Supabase in rethinking developer tooling for an AI-assisted workflow. The company's emphasis on discoverability through types and explicit configuration suggests a broader industry pattern: platforms that work well with AI agents also tend to work better for humans.
The Functions update is available now to all Netlify users. The platform continues to expand its AI capabilities, recently adding image generation models and event handler simplifications to its AI Gateway.
