Netlify integrates Claude Sonnet 5 across its AI infrastructure
Netlify has added support for Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 5 model to both its AI Gateway and Agent Runners platform, announced on LinkedIn on June 30. The integration removes the need for developers to manage API keys or configure authentication when using the model in Netlify Functions.
Developers can now call Claude Sonnet 5 directly using the Anthropic SDK within any Netlify Function type. The platform handles caching, rate limiting, and authentication automatically. This continues Netlify's push to simplify AI integration for web applications, following their redesign of the Functions API specifically for agent-driven development.
How the integration works
The implementation is straightforward. Developers import the Anthropic SDK and make API calls without passing credentials. Netlify's AI Gateway intercepts these requests and provides the necessary authentication with Anthropic's servers.
A basic implementation looks like this:
import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';
export default async () => {
const anthropic = new Anthropic();
const response = await anthropic.messages.create({
model: 'claude-sonnet-5',
max_tokens: 4096,
messages: [{ role: 'user', content: 'Your prompt here' }]
});
return new Response(JSON.stringify(response));
};
The same model is available in Agent Runners, Netlify's environment for autonomous coding agents. This allows AI agents to use Claude Sonnet 5 for code generation, debugging, and other development tasks without additional configuration.
Part of broader AI infrastructure push
The Claude Sonnet 5 addition follows recent expansions to Netlify's AI capabilities. According to the changelog, the platform has been steadily adding models from multiple providers, including Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image model and re-enabling Claude Fable 5 after a temporary removal.
Netlify's AI Gateway now supports models from Anthropic, Google, and other providers, all accessible through the same zero-config approach. The company has positioned this infrastructure as critical for what it calls "Agent Experience," or AX, which focuses on making platforms more accessible to AI coding assistants. The company even launched an open source framework called AXIS to help other platforms measure how well their APIs work with agents.

The integration works across all Netlify Function types, including background functions, scheduled functions, and edge functions. This means developers can use Claude Sonnet 5 for everything from real-time API responses to batch processing jobs.
Claude Sonnet 5 support is available now to all Netlify users. Full documentation is available in the AI Gateway overview.
