Netlify announced support for Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 in its AI Gateway, letting developers integrate the new model into Netlify Functions without managing API keys, authentication, or rate limits.
The update, posted to the company's changelog, extends Netlify's AI Gateway to handle the infrastructure layer automatically. Developers can use the Anthropic SDK directly in any Netlify Function, and the platform abstracts away key management, caching, and throttling.
Drop in the SDK and ship
The integration requires no configuration. Developers import the Anthropic SDK, call the Claude Fable 5 model, and deploy. The AI Gateway recognizes the request and applies platform-level authentication and caching without additional setup.
Here's the example Netlify published:
import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';
export default async () => {
const anthropic = new Anthropic();
const response = await anthropic.messages.create({
model: 'claude-fable-5',
max_tokens: 4096,
messages: [
{
role: 'user',
content: 'How can AI improve my cybersecurity?'
}
]
});
return new Response(JSON.stringify(response), {
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' }
});
};
The function works across all Netlify Function types, including background and edge functions. Developers can test locally using the Netlify CLI before deploying.

AI Gateway handles the infrastructure layer
Netlify's AI Gateway sits between the developer's function and the AI provider's API. When a function calls a supported model, the gateway intercepts the request, injects credentials stored at the platform level, applies rate limits, and caches responses where appropriate.
This means developers don't need to:
- Store API keys in environment variables
- Write caching logic for repeated queries
- Implement rate limiting or retry mechanisms
- Rotate credentials or manage auth tokens
The gateway supports multiple providers. Developers can switch models or providers by changing a string in the SDK call, no infrastructure changes required.
Context: Netlify's AI developer tooling
Netlify has been expanding its AI infrastructure over the past year. In April, the company launched Agent Runners, a feature that lets AI agents scaffold and deploy full applications directly to Netlify's platform. Earlier this month, Netlify shipped a plugin for Cursor, the AI-assisted code editor, connecting the IDE directly to Netlify's deployment pipeline.
The AI Gateway fits into this broader push to reduce infrastructure overhead for developers building AI-powered features. By handling authentication and caching at the platform level, Netlify lets teams focus on application logic rather than plumbing.
Claude Fable 5 joins existing models in the gateway, which already supports OpenAI, Anthropic's earlier Claude versions, and other providers. The full list of supported models is available in Netlify's AI Gateway documentation.
