Netlify Agent Runners Ask Clarifying Questions Before Building Apps

Netlify is giving its AI coding agents a chance to pause before they build. Agent Runners can now ask users clarifying questions when a prompt lacks details that could materially affect the resulting application, replacing an early guess with a brief interactive exchange.

The feature, announced on LinkedIn on August 19, 2026, is designed to improve the first deployed version of a project. Users can answer the questions they care about, skip others, and add context in their own words before the agent starts working.

That may sound like a small interface change, but it addresses a persistent weakness in prompt-driven application development. A request such as “build a booking site for a consulting business” leaves open decisions about customer accounts, appointment duration, visual style, data collection, and what happens after a booking. An agent that silently fills those gaps can produce a functional application that still misses the intended workflow.

A Checkpoint Before Credits Are Spent

Agent Runners take a prompt, build the project within a production environment, and return a deployed application without requiring a separately configured local environment or manual deployment step. Clarifying questions introduce an optional checkpoint before that process begins.

Netlify says the questions will not appear for every request. The underlying model decides whether more context would materially improve the result. When it does, the user sees a short set of questions rather than having the agent proceed on assumptions.

According to Netlify’s official blog post, the intended payoff is a first deployment that more closely reflects the user’s expectations. That matters because correcting an incorrect first pass takes additional time and can consume more credits through subsequent agent runs.

For small businesses and non-technical builders, the interaction could also make specification work less intimidating. Instead of writing an exhaustive initial prompt, a user can describe the core idea and respond when the agent identifies a consequential gap. Skipping remains an option, so the questions do not have to become a mandatory setup wizard.

The practical benefits are clearest in projects where a few choices can reshape the entire build:

  • Business workflows, such as whether leads should receive an automatic confirmation
  • Audience and permissions, including whether an application needs public pages or authenticated areas
  • Design direction, where brand tone or layout preferences affect the generated interface
  • Scope, such as whether a first version needs working integrations or only a prototype

Netlify Pushes Agents Further Into Deployment

The update follows Netlify’s move to open Agent Runners and AI Gateway to every customer. Together, the releases show the company positioning AI generation as part of its deployment workflow, rather than as a detached code-writing assistant.

That distinction is important. Agent Runners operate against a real production environment and hand back a deployed result, so misunderstandings can become visible applications quickly. Asking questions before execution adds a modest layer of deliberation to a workflow otherwise optimized for speed.

Netlify has also been tightening controls around generated and early-stage work. Its shift to private-by-default projects with separate preview visibility controls gives builders more control over who can see a project before launch. Clarifying questions address a different part of the same process: getting the application closer to the intended form before it reaches review.

The company’s changelog says agent runs require a credit-based pricing plan. Netlify has not indicated that clarifying questions carry a separate charge; its stated rationale is that better initial context can reduce the corrective runs, and credits, needed afterward.

Frequently asked questions

What is Netlify Agent Runners?

Netlify Agent Runners is an AI-powered workflow that takes an application idea, builds it inside a production environment, and returns a deployed project. It avoids the need to configure a local development environment or complete a separate deployment step.

When do Agent Runners ask clarifying questions?

Questions appear when the model determines that additional context could materially improve the result. They do not appear for every prompt, and users can answer individual questions, skip them, or provide extra instructions in their own words.

Which Netlify plan is required for Agent Runners?

Netlify’s changelog states that agent runs require a credit-based pricing plan. The supplied announcement does not identify a separate price for the clarifying-question feature.
