Netlify Redesigns Functions API for AI Agents With Typed Handlers and Config-Driven Setup

Netlify has released a major update to its serverless functions platform, redesigning the API with what the company calls "Agent Experience" in mind. The update introduces typed event handlers, fetchable module support, and config-driven function setup that make the platform easier for both developers and AI agents to work with.

The changes mark a shift from Netlify's 2023 Functions 2.0 release, which focused on developer experience. This time, the company is betting that the qualities that make an API pleasant for humans, such as clear naming and sensible defaults, are the same ones that make it legible to AI agents.

Event Handlers Get Named Exports

Event-triggered functions now work by exporting named handlers like userSignup, deploySucceeded, or formSubmitted instead of relying on magic filenames. Previously, developers had to remember platform-specific naming conventions that were easy to forget and hard for agents to discover. The new approach uses fully typed payloads, making event handling more discoverable through autocomplete and type checking.

Fetchable module support means code written for Deno, Bun, Hono, or Nitro can run on Netlify with minimal changes. A single module can now handle both web requests and platform events together, reducing the need to split logic across multiple files.

Background Functions and Resource Configuration Move to Code

Background functions are now declared with background: true in configuration rather than a -background filename suffix. The change makes the setup type-safe and config-driven, so agents can set it in code without guessing platform naming conventions.

Region, memory (up to 4 GB), and CPU (up to 2 vCPU) are all configurable per function, in code. Developers can validate these settings in deploy previews before going live, rather than discovering configuration issues at runtime.

The update follows Netlify's broader push into agent-friendly infrastructure. The company recently launched AXIS, an open source framework to measure API agent experience, and has been positioning itself as a platform designed for AI-native development workflows.

Everything in this release is additive. Existing function signatures keep working and nothing is deprecated, so teams can adopt the new API on their own timeline. The changes are available now across all Netlify plans.

The emphasis on agent experience reflects a larger trend in developer tooling. As AI coding assistants become more capable, platform APIs that are explicit, typed, and config-driven have an advantage. They can be understood, modified, and validated by agents without needing to memorize platform-specific conventions or guess at hidden behaviors.

Developers can read the full technical details in Netlify's blog post on the update or review the changes in the platform's official changelog.
