Momen has released server-side Stripe webhook handling and dynamic role assignment, enabling no-code developers to build secure membership platforms with automated access control tied to payment events.
The update allows Momen apps to process Stripe webhooks directly on the backend, eliminating the need for external middleware like Zapier or Make. When a customer completes a purchase or subscription renewal through Stripe, Momen can now automatically assign user roles, unlock content libraries, and manage recurring access without manual intervention. The team demonstrated the capability with Gates, a cloneable digital learning hub template designed for training academies that want to monetize proprietary courses behind paywalls.
How It Works
Momen's implementation handles the full webhook lifecycle server-side. When Stripe fires an event such as checkout.session.completed or invoice.payment_succeeded, Momen receives the payload, verifies the webhook signature for security, and triggers backend actionflows that can update user records, assign membership tiers, or revoke access based on payment status.
The Gates template showcases two revenue models: recurring subscriptions for ongoing course access and one-time purchases for individual modules. Each payment type triggers different role assignments in Momen's user management system. A user who subscribes to a monthly plan might receive a Premium role that unlocks all courses, while a one-time purchaser receives access only to specific content tied to their transaction.
Developers set up webhooks by configuring their Stripe dashboard to point to Momen's webhook endpoint, then building actionflows in Momen's visual editor to handle each event type. No code is required to map payment metadata to user roles or content permissions.
Dynamic Role Assignment
The role assignment system works by linking Stripe metadata to Momen's built-in user role framework. When creating a product or subscription plan in Stripe, developers can attach custom metadata fields that specify which role a customer should receive upon purchase. Momen reads this metadata from the webhook payload and updates the user's role in real time.
This approach supports tiered membership structures common in online academies. A Basic tier might grant access to foundational courses, while Pro and Enterprise tiers unlock advanced modules, live sessions, or downloadable resources. If a subscription lapses or a refund occurs, Momen can automatically downgrade the user's role, restricting access until payment resumes.
Momen previously added automated membership downgrades using scheduled actionflows, allowing creators to handle subscription lifecycle events like trial expirations and payment failures. The new webhook support extends this capability by reacting instantly to Stripe events rather than polling on a schedule.
Use Cases Beyond Education
While the Gates template targets training academies, the webhook infrastructure applies to any membership business model. SaaS products can gate features by subscription tier, content creators can sell premium articles or video libraries, and community platforms can restrict access to private forums or events based on payment status.
The server-side processing also improves security compared to client-side integrations. Payment logic and role assignments execute in Momen's backend environment, reducing exposure to tampering or unauthorized access attempts. Webhook signatures ensure that only legitimate Stripe requests trigger user permission changes.
The Gates template is available for cloning in Momen's project library, giving developers a starting point for building similar platforms. The setup includes pre-configured actionflows for common Stripe events, user role tables, and content permission logic that can be customized for different business models.
