Momen has released a new automation capability that allows users to build scheduled workflows for automatic membership downgrades based on Stripe subscription events.
The feature uses Momen's Actionflow system to listen for Stripe signals, then batch-updates user database tiers when a subscription expires or a recurring payment fails. According to a LinkedIn announcement, the workflow can handle expired free trials and failed payments without manual intervention.
How It Works
The new automation relies on scheduled Actionflows, a workflow system that can trigger based on external events or time-based conditions. When integrated with Stripe, the system monitors subscription status changes and executes database updates automatically.
Momen provides a cloneable project template and tutorial to help users set up the workflow. The approach is similar to previous Stripe integrations the platform has released, but focuses specifically on tier management rather than intake or payment processing.
Users set up the Actionflow to run on a schedule, checking for Stripe webhook signals that indicate subscription changes. When a subscription expires or a payment fails, the workflow updates the corresponding user record in Momen's database, changing their access tier accordingly.
Use Cases
The automation addresses a common pain point for SaaS builders: maintaining accurate user permissions when subscriptions lapse. Without automated downgrades, users who cancel or whose payments fail may retain premium access until an administrator manually adjusts their account.
Common scenarios include:
- Failed recurring payments: When a credit card expires or a charge is declined, the system can automatically downgrade the user to a free tier
- Expired trials: Users who sign up for a trial period can be moved to a limited access tier when the trial ends
- Voluntary cancellations: Subscription cancellations trigger immediate or grace-period downgrades
The batch update capability means the system can process multiple tier changes at once, useful for apps with high user volumes or frequent subscription changes.
Technical Implementation
The tutorial linked in the announcement walks through connecting Stripe webhooks to Momen's database, configuring the Actionflow schedule, and mapping subscription statuses to user tiers. The cloneable project provides a working example that users can modify for their specific tier structure.
Momen's database system stores user tier information natively, so the downgrade workflow updates records directly without requiring external databases or API calls beyond Stripe. This follows the platform's recent pattern of native integrations for common SaaS workflows.
The feature is available now to all Momen users. The company has been expanding its automation and integration capabilities, positioning the platform as a full-stack solution for membership and subscription-based web apps.
