Lovable announced this week the launch of skills, a feature designed to transform its vibe-coding platform into what the company calls "a specialized teammate with context, knowledge, and targeted instructions." The update lets users invoke pre-built capabilities or create custom instructions that persist across sessions.
The feature ships with five built-in skills that users can summon by typing a forward slash in the chat interface. Each skill targets a specific development workflow: /redesign handles visual UI overhauls, /accessibility audits and fixes accessibility issues, /seo-review generates SEO recommendations, /video-creator builds animated videos programmatically, and /skill-creator guides users through setting up their own custom skills.
How Skills Work
Skills in Lovable function as reusable instruction sets stored as markdown files. When a user invokes a skill, the platform loads the associated instructions and applies them to the current project context. According to documentation from the company, skills let developers "stop repeating yourself every time you build" by encoding common patterns, coding standards, or domain-specific requirements once and reusing them across projects.
The /skill-creator meta-skill evaluates project needs and walks users through crafting effective custom skills. Users can also create skills by asking Lovable directly in natural language, without needing to invoke a specific command.
The skills feature builds on Lovable's existing chat-driven development model, where users describe what they want to build and the platform generates working code. Skills add a layer of specialization, allowing the AI to adopt specific roles or follow detailed guidelines without requiring users to re-enter instructions each time.

Built-In Skills Target Common Workflows
The five launch skills address workflows that typically require repeated manual input or domain expertise. The /redesign skill focuses exclusively on visual changes, preserving functionality while updating aesthetics. The /accessibility skill runs audits based on WCAG guidelines and can automatically remediate common issues like missing alt text or insufficient color contrast.
The /seo-review skill, part of Lovable's recently launched SEO capabilities, generates recommendations for metadata, semantic HTML, content structure, and indexing. The /video-creator skill generates animated video content programmatically, though Lovable has not detailed the underlying implementation or supported formats.
Users who need custom skills can invoke /skill-creator to receive guidance on structuring instructions, defining scope, and ensuring the skill integrates with existing project requirements. The company has not disclosed whether skills can be shared across workspaces or published to a public library.
Positioning Against Traditional Development Tools
Lovable competes in a crowded space of AI-assisted development tools, including Cursor, Bolt, and v0. Skills differentiate Lovable by offering predefined workflows rather than relying solely on general-purpose code generation. The feature positions the platform as a specialized assistant rather than a blank slate.
The skills launch follows several recent updates from Lovable. The company recently introduced a "vent tool" that lets its AI agent file bug reports about its own performance, and shipped integrations with data warehouses, APIs, and live web data sources. The company has also added native support for Google Search Console and Semrush-powered SEO research.
Lovable has not announced pricing changes associated with skills. The feature is available to all users on the platform's existing plans. Developers interested in testing the feature can access it immediately by typing / in any Lovable project chat.
