Gatheround has launched an AI-powered onboarding automation through its Donut integration, targeting HR teams looking to reduce manual work around new hire processes. The AI Onboarding Agent promises to transform uploaded documents and goals into complete Slack-based workflows within minutes.
The tool addresses a familiar pain point: HR teams spend significant time coordinating IT setup, sending manager reminders, and scheduling check-ins with new employees. Donut's approach uses AI to parse onboarding documentation, set milestones, and generate automated sequences that run directly in Slack.
How the AI Agent Works
According to the LinkedIn announcement, users upload their existing onboarding materials, define objectives, and receive a structured workflow ready to deploy. The system operates within Slack's existing infrastructure, meaning HR teams don't need to onboard employees to yet another platform.
The timing aligns with Donut's acquisition of Gatheround late last year, which brought together two workplace connection tools under one roof. While Gatheround focused on structured video meetings and icebreakers, Donut specialized in Slack-native workflows for introductions, peer recognition, and team rituals.
This launch represents Donut's first major AI-driven product since the acquisition. The company positions the agent as part of a broader shift toward what it calls "agentic AI," systems that can execute multi-step processes rather than simply generating text or answering questions.
Scaling Onboarding Without Headcount
The core value proposition centers on scalability. As companies grow, onboarding complexity typically grows with them, often requiring dedicated people ops headcount. An AI agent that can replicate standard workflows theoretically lets smaller HR teams support larger organizations.
Donut's existing user base already runs over 1.5 million automated introductions through Slack, according to recent company data. The onboarding agent extends that automation model to a more complex, multi-week process involving documents, stakeholders, and milestone tracking.
The announcement emphasizes speed of setup rather than customization depth. Whether the AI can handle the nuances of different role types, departments, or compliance requirements remains an open question. HR workflows often require flexibility for edge cases, and it's unclear how much manual intervention is still needed once the initial workflow is generated.
Donut has not disclosed pricing for the AI Onboarding Agent or whether it requires an enterprise tier. The company's existing Slack app operates on a freemium model with paid plans for larger teams and advanced features.
