Gatheround Integrates Donut Shoutouts Into Slack for Peer Recognition

Gatheround has integrated Donut Shoutouts into Slack, offering HR teams and employees a streamlined way to exchange recognition points without leaving their primary workspace. The feature embeds peer recognition directly into daily workflows, using Slack nudges, weekly point resets, and tangible rewards to reinforce company values.

The company detailed the implementation in Episode 2 of its "Behind the Donut" series, showing how its own team uses Shoutouts to make recognition a routine part of work rather than a periodic HR initiative. The system operates entirely within Slack's interface, removing the friction of switching to standalone recognition platforms.

How Shoutouts Work

Donut Shoutouts lets team members award points to colleagues through simple Slack commands or reactions. Administrators set point budgets that reset weekly, preventing hoarding while encouraging regular recognition. Slack reminders prompt users to distribute points, and leaders can tie rewards to accumulated totals, whether gift cards, company swag, or time off.

The feature also tracks which company values get cited most frequently during shoutouts, giving HR teams data on which behaviors employees actually notice and appreciate. This feedback loop helps organizations understand whether stated values align with observed culture.

Integration with Slack means recognition becomes visible in channels where teams already collaborate. Public shoutouts create a record of contributions and reinforce positive behaviors across the organization. For distributed teams, this visibility helps remote employees see acknowledgment they might miss in physical offices.

Recognition as Retention

Gatheround positions Shoutouts as more than morale building. In markets where retention matters as much as recruitment, visible peer recognition can reduce turnover by making employees feel seen. The weekly reset mechanic keeps recognition frequent rather than rare, a pattern research suggests has more impact than annual awards.

The company's focus on automation addresses a common HR pain point: recognition programs that require manual administration often fade after launch. By handling nudges, resets, and tracking automatically, Donut Shoutouts reduces the operational burden on people teams.

Gatheround acquired Donut in December 2024, combining its video-based connection tools with Donut's Slack-native employee engagement features. The acquisition brought together Gatheround's focus on structured team interactions with Donut's suite of onboarding, mentorship, and recognition tools, all designed to run inside Slack.

For teams already using Slack as their hub, adding Shoutouts means one less login, one less tool to champion, and one less integration to maintain. Whether that simplicity translates to sustained usage will depend on whether leaders model the behavior and whether employees find real value in the points and rewards offered.
