Gather Town Adds Go-Kart Mode for Faster Navigation in Virtual Workspaces

Gather Town has added a go-kart mode that lets users zip through virtual office spaces at higher speeds, offering a faster alternative to the platform's default walking pace.

The new feature activates when users hold down the Shift key while using arrow keys to navigate. Instead of walking, their avatar switches to a personal go-kart that moves significantly faster through Gather's 2D virtual environments. The company announced the update on LinkedIn, framing it as a solution for when "walking is too slow."

A Small Change With Practical Impact

While go-kart mode might sound whimsical, it addresses a real friction point in virtual office navigation. Gather Town spaces can be large, especially for companies that have built out detailed floor plans with multiple rooms, lounges, and meeting areas. Walking between distant areas at normal speed can feel sluggish, particularly when users need to move quickly between meetings or catch up with a colleague across the map.

The feature requires no setup. Users simply hold Shift and press arrow keys to start driving. The implementation is straightforward, fitting into Gather's existing keyboard-based movement system without adding complexity.

Gather Town has been steadily refining its virtual workspace since launching version 2.0. The platform brought back dancing in a previous update and has added features like interactive whiteboards and board games to make virtual collaboration feel less sterile.

Go-kart mode fits this pattern of small, playful updates that solve practical problems while maintaining Gather's game-like aesthetic. The feature leans into the platform's pixelated, retro design language rather than fighting it.

Why Movement Speed Matters

For distributed teams using Gather Town as their primary workspace, navigation speed directly impacts productivity. If it takes 15 seconds to walk from your desk to a conference room versus 5 seconds to drive there, that difference compounds over dozens of daily interactions. Faster movement reduces the friction of spontaneous conversations, one of Gather's core value propositions over traditional video call tools like Zoom or Slack huddles.

The go-kart implementation also adds a layer of personality to what could have been a purely functional speed boost. Rather than simply increasing walk speed globally or adding a "sprint" button, Gather chose a solution that reinforces the platform's playful identity.

The update is live now for all Gather users. No software update or configuration is required; the feature works immediately in existing spaces.
