Framer Adds Full Markdown Support and Date Variables to CMS

Framer has updated its CMS with a handful of workflow improvements designed to make content editing faster and less friction-heavy. The changes include full Markdown support, better copy-paste behavior, and two new date variables that track when content was created or last modified.

The updates address common pain points for users managing blogs, portfolios, and documentation sites. Instead of relying solely on visual editing, teams can now write and format posts using Markdown syntax directly in the CMS. That means headers, lists, links, and inline code blocks can be added without switching contexts or hunting for toolbar buttons.

New Date Variables for Automatic Timestamping

Framer's CMS now includes Created and Updated variables. These fields automatically populate when a piece of content is first saved and whenever it's modified, giving editors a lightweight way to surface publish dates or last-updated notices without manual entry.

The variables can be dropped into templates and displayed on live pages. For blogs or resource libraries where freshness matters, this removes a common source of manual upkeep. Users no longer need to remember to update a date field every time they revise a post.

Copy-paste also got smoother. Framer says the CMS now better preserves formatting when moving text between fields or importing content from external editors. That reduces cleanup work and makes it easier to migrate existing content or collaborate across tools like Notion or Google Docs.

Markdown as a Standard Workflow

Full Markdown support is a meaningful step for Framer's positioning as a website builder for designers and developers. While visual editors dominate the no-code space, Markdown remains a preferred format for technical writers, documentation teams, and anyone who values portability and plain-text editing.

Framer already competes with tools like Webflow and Squarespace on design flexibility. Adding Markdown gives it a clearer lane for content-driven sites where speed and simplicity matter as much as visual polish. The CMS changes follow recent updates to Framer's layout tools, including support for masonry grids and improvements to its AI-powered Workshop assistant.

The update is available now to all Framer users. The company announced the changes in a LinkedIn post and linked to additional details on its website.
