Framer Adds AI-Powered Auto Rename for Faster Layer Organization
Framer has announced on LinkedIn a new Auto Rename feature that uses AI to clean up layer names in seconds. Designers can select any layer in their canvas and hit Option + R on Mac or Alt + R on Windows to trigger an automatic rename based on the layer's content and context. The feature arrives as part of Framer's ongoing effort to streamline design workflows with intelligent automation.
Auto Rename targets one of the most tedious parts of interface design: keeping layers organized. When prototyping quickly or working with duplicated components, designers often end up with generic names like "Frame 1", "Group 12", or "Rectangle Copy 3". Framer's AI scans the selected layer, interprets its visual content and position, then suggests a descriptive name. The keyboard shortcut makes the process nearly instant, requiring no panel navigation or manual typing.
The tool joins a growing list of AI-powered features Framer has shipped in recent months. In December, the platform introduced Squircles for super-smooth corner styling, and earlier this year it rolled out Auto Translate to keep multilingual sites in sync across locales. Auto Rename fits the same pattern: small, focused AI tools that remove friction without requiring users to learn complex prompt engineering.
How It Works in Practice
According to the official announcement, designers simply select one or more layers in the canvas and press the keyboard shortcut. The AI evaluates each layer's properties, including its type, child elements, text content, and visual characteristics, then applies a human-readable name. For designers working with large component libraries or complex pages, this means significantly less time spent scrolling through layer panels trying to decipher what "Frame 47" actually contains.
The feature does not appear to require any configuration or model selection, unlike Framer's Auto Translate tool, which lets users choose from multiple AI models depending on their quality and speed preferences. Auto Rename seems designed to be a one-button solution: press the shortcut, get a better name, keep designing.
Framer has also been expanding its layout and organization tools more broadly. The March 2026 update introduced Bento Grid layouts and freeform Stack sorting, making it easier to rearrange content without breaking the underlying structure. Auto Rename complements these improvements by ensuring that reorganized layers remain easy to identify.
Why This Matters for Designers
Good layer hygiene is critical for collaboration. When designers hand off files to developers or share components with teammates, clear naming conventions prevent confusion and reduce back-and-forth questions. Auto Rename makes it realistic to maintain that hygiene even when moving fast.
For solo designers, the feature simply saves time. Instead of pausing to manually rename every duplicated button or nested frame, they can batch-select layers and rename them all at once. The AI handles the tedious part, letting designers focus on the actual design decisions.
Framer's approach mirrors how other design tools are integrating AI for workflow optimization. Figma and other platforms have experimented with similar quality-of-life features, but Framer's implementation stands out for its simplicity. There are no panels to open, no prompts to write, just a keyboard shortcut and an immediate result.
The update is live now for all Framer users and works across both desktop platforms. More details are available on Framer's updates page.
