Figma has begun rolling out video playback directly on the design canvas, announced on LinkedIn this week. The feature allows designers to embed and play video files within their design files, eliminating the need to switch between applications during presentations or reviews.
The update arrives as part of Figma's ongoing effort to consolidate design workflows into a single environment. Teams can now include video content alongside static mockups, prototypes, and documentation, potentially reducing context-switching during collaborative sessions.
Native playback without exports
Video files can now be placed directly onto the canvas and played back without exporting or opening external media players. This functionality mirrors how images are currently handled in Figma, but extends support to motion content. The feature is particularly relevant for teams working on video-heavy products like streaming interfaces, social media apps, or content platforms where showing actual video behavior is critical to design reviews.
The staged rollout suggests Figma is deploying the feature gradually across its user base. Teams should expect to see video playback controls appear in their canvas toolbar over the coming days.
Design system and presentation implications
For design systems teams, video playback on canvas opens new documentation possibilities. Motion guidelines, animation examples, and interaction demonstrations can now live directly within design system files rather than being linked externally or described in text. This keeps all reference materials in one searchable location.
Presentation workflows also stand to benefit. Designers frequently need to show how video content appears within UI layouts, whether demonstrating a video player's responsive behavior or showing how thumbnails transition to full playback. Previously, this required either static mockups with placeholder frames or jumping between Figma and a separate video player.
The timing follows Figma's recent expansion of AI image tools across FigJam, Buzz, and Slides, signaling continued investment in multimedia capabilities. The company has also been building out more sophisticated workflow automation, including Weave's workflow builder for images, video, and 3D.
Supported video formats and file size limits have not been detailed in the announcement. Teams working with large video files may need to optimize content for canvas use, particularly if collaborating in real-time where bandwidth becomes a factor.
The feature is rolling out now to Figma users on the design canvas. No action is required to enable it; the functionality will appear automatically as the rollout completes.
