Figma Releases Check Designs for Design System Compliance Across Team Plans

Figma has made its Check Designs feature generally available to Full seat, Organization, and Enterprise plans, expanding access to automated design system auditing capabilities that help teams keep files synchronized with their design systems.

The feature, announced on LinkedIn, offers four key capabilities: variable and style suggestions, color contrast suggestions, library mismatch detection, and detached component detection. Together, these tools aim to surface inconsistencies before they compound into technical debt.

How Check Designs Works

Check Designs runs automated audits on Figma files, flagging instances where designers have deviated from established patterns. When a team member uses a one-off color value instead of a design token, or unknowingly detaches a component from the library, the system surfaces these issues directly in the interface.

The variable and style suggestion engine compares local values against the design system library, recommending matches when it detects close approximations. For accessibility, the color contrast checker evaluates text against WCAG standards, identifying combinations that fail minimum contrast ratios. Library mismatch detection alerts designers when components reference outdated or incorrect library versions, while detached component detection catches instances where a component has been unlinked from its source.

These checks run automatically rather than requiring manual audits, reducing the maintenance burden on design system teams. The feature addresses a common pain point: as design systems scale across dozens or hundreds of files, maintaining consistency becomes exponentially harder without tooling support.

Enterprise Focus

The general availability rollout targets organizations with mature design system practices rather than individual designers. By limiting access to Full seat plans and above, Figma positions Check Designs as infrastructure for teams managing design at scale, similar to how design systems continue to evolve in response to organizational needs.

This release follows Figma's pattern of building features that reduce coordination costs in distributed teams. Where previous updates focused on workflow improvements like tab groups for cognitive load management, Check Designs tackles system-level consistency. The feature complements manual design reviews but doesn't replace them, functioning as a first pass that catches obvious deviations before human review.

For design system teams, the immediate value proposition is time savings. Instead of manually reviewing every file for token usage and component integrity, teams can rely on automated checks to surface the most critical issues. The tool effectively scales the reach of a small design systems team across a much larger product organization.

Availability

Check Designs is live now for Figma users on Full seat, Organization, and Enterprise plans. Teams on lower-tier plans do not have access to the feature. Figma has not announced pricing changes or plans to extend availability to additional plan tiers.
