Discord Introduces Orbs Virtual Currency and Partners With Kantar for Quest Measurement

Discord is expanding its Quests advertising program with two significant updates: a new virtual currency called Orbs that users can earn and spend without a payment method, and a measurement partnership with Kantar to help advertisers quantify brand impact beyond performance metrics.

The platform announced the changes on LinkedIn, describing them as upgrades designed to deliver both advertiser value and player engagement.

Orbs Give Users a Path to Premium Features

Discord Orbs are virtual rewards that users earn by completing Quests, the platform's interactive advertising challenges. Players can spend Orbs in Discord's Shop on Nitro credits, profile cosmetics, and other items without providing payment information.

The feature is rolling out gradually, starting with a small group of users before expanding more broadly. Discord positions Orbs as particularly valuable for users who want to try its Nitro subscription service without commitment, effectively creating a no-friction onboarding path to premium features. As we previously covered, this global expansion marks a shift in how Discord monetizes its user base through engagement rather than direct payment.

For advertisers, the addition of Orbs simplifies campaign launches by providing a standardized reward that Discord says players already value. Rather than negotiating custom prizes or in-game items for each Quest, brands can now offer Orbs as a universal incentive.

Kantar Partnership Adds Brand Measurement Layer

Alongside Orbs, Discord announced a partnership with Kantar to run Brand Lift studies for advertising campaigns on the platform. Kantar's measurement tools will enable advertisers to track metrics including awareness, recall, and favorability, moving beyond traditional performance indicators like clicks and completions.

The partnership addresses a common challenge for advertisers on emerging platforms: proving that engagement translates to brand perception shifts. Discord Quests already drive user actions, but quantifying how those interactions affect brand sentiment has been harder to demonstrate at scale.

Kantar will provide the infrastructure for these studies, allowing advertisers to compare exposed and control groups within Discord's user base. The data should help brands justify Quest campaigns to internal stakeholders who require proof of brand impact, not just engagement numbers.

Why This Matters for Discord's Ad Business

These updates signal Discord's intention to build a more mature advertising platform. Orbs reduce friction for both users and advertisers, while brand measurement tools give marketers the reporting they need to scale budgets.

Discord Quests launched as an experiment in native advertising that felt less intrusive than traditional display ads. By embedding brand challenges directly into the platform experience, Discord created a model where users voluntarily engage with advertising in exchange for rewards. The addition of a universal virtual currency and third-party measurement makes that model more sustainable.

The timing also reflects broader industry trends. As performance marketing becomes more challenging due to privacy changes and cookie deprecation, brands are investing more in upper-funnel tactics that require brand lift measurement to prove effectiveness.

Discord says it will continue evolving Quests to balance advertiser impact with user experience. The platform's blog post promises additional details, though specific timelines for wider Orbs availability and campaign case studies using Kantar measurement remain unclear.

For now, Discord is positioning itself as a platform where brands can reach engaged gaming and community audiences through interactive formats that users actually want to complete, backed by measurement that justifies the spend.
