Discord announced a partnership with Riot Games to embed social features directly into League of Legends and VALORANT, allowing players to manage their Discord friends without leaving the game. The integration, available now in select regions for League of Legends, eliminates the need to alt-tab between applications.
Players who link their Discord and Riot accounts can invite Discord friends straight to their in-game party, copy party links to share in Discord servers, and view which Discord contacts play Riot titles. The feature set will expand to VALORANT later this summer.
No More Alt-Tabbing
The integration addresses a common friction point for competitive gamers: coordinating with friends across multiple applications. By embedding Discord's social graph directly into the game client, players can see their Discord friend list, check who's online, and send party invites without switching windows.
Party links add another coordination layer. Players can generate a shareable link from within League of Legends and paste it directly into their favorite Discord server, letting friends join with a single click.
Built on Discord's Social SDK
The Riot integration uses Discord's Embedded App SDK, which the company previously made available to developers to add Discord-powered social features to their games. Discord positions the SDK as a way for game studios to leverage its 200 million monthly active users without building social infrastructure from scratch.
Riot's implementation demonstrates the SDK's capabilities at scale. With over 150 million monthly players across League of Legends and VALORANT combined, the integration could drive significant adoption of Discord's in-game social features.
Discord noted that other developers interested in adding similar functionality can learn more through their developer portal. The company has been steadily expanding its gaming partnerships, recently launching features like Quest-driven PC installs and native item shops for games like Rust.
Regional Rollout
The League of Legends features are currently live in select regions, though Discord did not specify which markets have access. VALORANT players will need to wait until later this summer for the same functionality.
Account linking happens through the game client. Once connected, Discord will display League of Legends or VALORANT activity as the player's status, making it easier for friends to see when someone is in-game and available to party up.
The partnership represents a deeper integration than Discord's typical game presence features. Rather than simply showing what game someone is playing, the Riot integration creates a bidirectional connection between Discord's social layer and Riot's matchmaking systems.
