Descript Adds One-Click VHS Effect to Video Editor
Descript has released a new VHS effect that recreates the visual aesthetic of 1990s videotape in a single click. The feature, announced on LinkedIn, preserves the tracking lines, analog fuzz, and color grading that defined VHS while removing the technical limitations that made the format obsolete.
The effect appears in Descript's redesigned Effects drawer, which the company updated in its June 2026 changelog. Users can now apply the VHS look directly from the Properties panel, alongside nine other new visual effects introduced in the same release.
How It Works
The VHS effect applies to any video clip in the timeline. Unlike period-accurate VHS playback, which suffered from tape degradation, tracking errors, and generation loss, Descript's implementation isolates the visual signature without the artifacts that degraded footage quality. The effect includes adjustable intensity for tracking distortion and color shift, letting editors dial in the exact era they're targeting.
According to the changelog, the effect was developed during Descript's Customer-Obsessed Telethon, a 48-hour hackathon where the team built top-voted feature requests. The event shipped 70 tickets and donated $14,000 to the Sierra Club based on completion milestones.
Expanding Creative Options
The VHS effect joins a growing toolkit of one-click visual treatments in Descript. The June update also introduced color correction controls, as previously reported, and post-recording lighting adjustments that let editors fix exposure issues after the fact.
These additions reflect Descript's broader strategy of collapsing multi-step workflows into inline controls. Where traditional video editors require separate plugins or compositing software to achieve retro looks, Descript embeds these treatments directly in the timeline.
The company has been shipping quality-of-life improvements at a steady pace. Recent updates include jump cut smoothing for talking-head videos and lighting correction that adjusts brightness without re-recording.
Why VHS, Why Now
The VHS aesthetic has seen a resurgence in online video, particularly among creators targeting Gen Z and millennial audiences. The look signals a specific cultural moment, often used to frame nostalgia-driven content or add texture to modern footage. By packaging this as a preset, Descript removes the need for third-party plugins or manual color grading.
The effect is available now to all Descript users. It works with any video resolution, though the company notes that higher-resolution source footage produces cleaner results when the distortion is applied.
