OpenAI has released a major update to ChatGPT's image generation capabilities, introducing GPT-Image-1.5 alongside a dedicated Images interface. The update delivers substantial performance improvements and makes AI-powered image creation more accessible to the platform's millions of users.

Four Times Faster, More Precise

The new GPT-Image-1.5 model addresses several pain points that have limited image generation workflows. According to OpenAI's announcement on LinkedIn, the model generates images four times faster than its predecessor while maintaining quality.

Beyond raw speed, the update focuses on practical usability. The model now follows instructions more accurately, preserving details that earlier versions would often lose or misinterpret. For users who iterate on images through multiple edits, the new precise editing capability means fewer frustrating regenerations to get the desired result.

Dedicated Images Surface

OpenAI has also introduced a new Images tab in ChatGPT's sidebar, creating a dedicated workspace for visual generation separate from text-based conversations. Previously, users had to request images within regular chat threads, which could clutter conversation history and make it harder to manage multiple image projects.

The standalone interface suggests OpenAI views image generation as a core feature rather than an add-on, positioning ChatGPT more directly against dedicated tools like Midjourney. For small business owners and creators who already use ChatGPT for content work, having image generation in the same platform reduces tool switching.

Available Now for All Users

The rollout is notably broad. GPT-Image-1.5 is available immediately to all ChatGPT users, not just paid subscribers. This contrasts with OpenAI's typical approach of testing new features with Plus or Enterprise customers first, as seen with their reasoning models and other advanced capabilities.

Developers can also access GPT-Image-1.5 through the API, opening possibilities for building image generation into custom applications. This matters for builders using no-code platforms like Bubble or Softr who want to integrate AI image creation without managing multiple vendor relationships.

The timing aligns with OpenAI's broader platform expansion. Following their $122 billion funding round earlier this year, the company has been steadily adding features that transform ChatGPT from a conversational AI into a more comprehensive creative toolset.

What This Means for Creators

For the Create With community, the update removes friction from workflows that combine text and visual content. A solopreneur writing a newsletter in ChatGPT can now generate accompanying images without switching to a separate tool. The speed improvement makes it practical to iterate on visual concepts during brainstorming sessions rather than treating image generation as a separate production step.

The detail preservation feature particularly benefits users who need images that match specific brand guidelines or technical requirements. Earlier models would sometimes simplify or alter requested details in ways that required manual editing in tools like Canva or Figma.

OpenAI has not disclosed technical details about GPT-Image-1.5's architecture or training methodology. The company also has not announced pricing changes, suggesting the improvements come from optimization rather than a more expensive underlying model.
