Bubble's Expression Composer Now Uses AI Agent for Plain Language Logic

Bubble has upgraded its Expression Composer so the "Generate with AI" feature now routes through the platform's AI Agent. The change allows builders to describe the logic they need in plain language and have the system produce ready-to-use expressions automatically, announced on LinkedIn.

For anyone who has worked in Bubble before, the friction is familiar. You know what your app should do, but translating that into a dynamic expression can be a separate task requiring knowledge of Bubble's syntax and structure. The updated Expression Composer is designed to eliminate that translation layer entirely.

How It Works

Builders open the expression composer and describe what they need in conversational language. The AI Agent interprets the request and generates the corresponding Bubble expression, inserting the correct operators, data references, and conditionals based on the app's existing data structure. The expression appears in the composer ready to use.

The update is the latest in a series of AI-powered features Bubble has shipped this year. In recent months, the company added plugin detection and marketplace recommendations to its AI Agent and introduced the ability to generate API Connector calls from plain language descriptions. The platform also added Claude 3.5 Sonnet to its AI integration options earlier this year.

Why Expressions Matter

Expressions are the logic layer that powers UI behavior, conditionals, and workflows in Bubble apps. They determine what data appears, when elements show or hide, and how user actions trigger responses. For non-technical builders, writing expressions can be a bottleneck. For experienced users, the tedium of translating intent into syntax slows iteration.

The shift to natural language input is consistent with broader moves in no-code platforms to reduce the gap between what a builder wants and what the tool requires. Tools like Lovable and Bolt have leaned into AI-first interfaces. Bubble's approach layers AI assistance into an existing visual builder, keeping the expression composer intact while automating the syntax.

Technical Context

Bubble's Expression Composer has always been a central part of the platform's workflow editor, where users define dynamic data sources and conditional logic. The "Generate with AI" button previously offered a basic generation mode. Routing it through the Agent gives the feature access to more context about the app's data types, plugins, and API configurations, which should improve the relevance and accuracy of the generated expressions.

The Agent itself has been in development for several months and appears to be evolving into a broader assistant for the platform. Beyond expressions, it now handles plugin discovery, API setup, and potentially other editor tasks.

Builders using the updated feature will still need to review generated expressions to ensure they match their intent, especially in complex apps with custom data structures. But the feature should reduce the initial lift of writing expressions from scratch and lower the learning curve for new users unfamiliar with Bubble's syntax conventions.

The update is available now to all Bubble users through the expression composer in the editor.

AI Lets You Build Everything—Here’s Why You Still Never Launch

Tom Wesolowski, owner of NoCodeRefactoring.com, delivers a conference talk exposing how AI's ability to build anything has created a new problem: chronic overbuilding that prevents launches. Using a real marketplace project as a case study, he demonstrates how an 80% scope reduction transformed a stalled four-month development into a revenue-generating product launched in two weeks. The talk provides a practical framework for identifying the minimal viable customer loop and postponing everything else until real user demand validates the need.
