Bolt Adds Visual Edits for Direct Canvas Changes

Visual Edits is now live in Bolt, giving builders a way to click elements in an app preview and change them directly on the canvas. Text blocks, navigation bars and buttons can all be selected, edited and saved as a batch.

According to the LinkedIn announcement, the feature is designed for the final adjustments that can take longer to describe in a prompt than to make by hand. Examples include changing copy, aligning a navigation item or making a button one shade darker.

How Bolt Visual Edits works

Visual Edits starts with the Select tool inside the preview. Once it is active, builders can choose a supported interface element and make changes through the visual editing controls.

  1. 1

    Activate Select

turn on the Select tool in the preview

  2. 2

    Choose elements

select text blocks, navigation bars or buttons

  3. 3

    Make edits

change the selected elements directly on the canvas

  4. 4

    Save the batch

press Save changes to implement the edits

The visual toolbar supports changes to text, size and colour. Multiple edits can be prepared before they are sent to the model, rather than implementing each adjustment separately.

ElementAvailable workflow
Text blockSelect it and edit the copy on the canvas
Navigation barSelect it and adjust it in the preview
ButtonSelect it and change properties such as colour

Prompts have not been removed from this workflow. If an adjustment is easier to describe than perform with the visual controls, the prompt box still works on the selected element. Builders can therefore choose between clicking through a change and giving Bolt an instruction for the same selection.

This follows other changes to Bolt’s prompt workflow, including prompt queueing to keep app builds moving without waiting. Visual Edits adds a direct editing route for smaller interface changes while leaving the prompt box available.

The first Visual Edits release

Bolt describes Visual Edits as bringing WYSIWYG website editing into its app-building workflow. This is the first release, and Bolt is asking users which visual editing capabilities they want added next.

No additional capabilities or release dates were named. The current release focuses on selecting visible elements, changing supported properties and sending those changes to the model together.
