Bolt shipped a frequently requested feature that lets users attach design systems to projects that already exist, not just new builds.
The update addresses a workflow gap that forced developers to either commit to a design system at project start or rebuild from scratch. Users can now open Project Settings in any active project, attach a design system, and Bolt will apply it to all subsequent edits and builds. The change is reversible: design systems can be detached or swapped at any time through the same settings panel.
Design systems meet iteration
Bolt introduced Design System Agents earlier this year, allowing teams to generate production-ready prototypes that match brand guidelines from the first prompt. But that workflow assumed upfront decisions. Teams prototyping quickly or testing multiple directions often started projects without a design system, then hit friction when trying to standardize styling mid-development.
The new attach-and-detach model fixes that. A designer can now prototype freely, validate direction with stakeholders, then lock in brand consistency by attaching a system before handoff to engineering. If the project shifts, the system can be removed or replaced without losing work.
Bolt announced the feature in a LinkedIn post that called it "small but heavily requested." The company has been moving fast on collaboration features in recent months, following role-based access controls and multiplayer mode for real-time editing.
How it works
The feature lives in Project Settings, accessible from any open project. After selecting a design system, Bolt applies it to new prompts and edits going forward; existing code remains unchanged unless explicitly updated. Users can detach the system or attach a different one at any point, making it practical for teams that work across multiple brands or need to test visual variations before committing.
The update also supports workflows where non-technical team members prototype in Bolt, then hand structured, system-compliant code to engineers for production deployment. That handoff has historically required manual cleanup or rebuilds; attaching a design system before export reduces that friction.
Bolt competes directly with Lovable, Replit, and v0 in the AI-assisted development space. Design system flexibility is emerging as table stakes in the category, particularly for teams building customer-facing products where brand consistency matters from prototype to production.
The feature is available now to all Bolt users. No separate setup or upgrade is required; design systems can be attached through Project Settings in any existing or new project.
