Stripe Link has crossed 300 million users, the company announced at Stripe Tour Paris, just months after hitting 250 million. The accelerated checkout product now supports Klarna, Pix, UPI, and stablecoins, giving merchants access to popular payment methods across Europe, Latin America, India, and crypto-native customers.
William Gaybrick, Stripe's Chief Product Officer, shared the milestone on stage in Paris alongside data showing French businesses on Stripe are increasingly international. One in three customers of French businesses on the platform now comes from outside France, with cross-border revenue up from 16% in 2020 to 22% today.
Why Payment Method Variety Matters
The expansion reflects a core tension in global commerce: customers expect to pay with familiar, local methods. A buyer in São Paulo may prefer Pix, Brazil's instant payment system. A customer in Mumbai likely wants UPI. European shoppers increasingly opt for buy-now-pay-later services like Klarna.
Link addresses this by letting businesses offer these methods without custom integrations for each market. The product saves customer payment details across participating merchants, speeding up repeat purchases and reducing cart abandonment. For businesses selling internationally, it means one integration can unlock payment methods across dozens of countries.
The stablecoin addition is particularly notable. While crypto payments remain niche, Stripe has steadily expanded its digital asset offerings, positioning itself for businesses serving crypto-native customers or operating in markets where stablecoins offer advantages over traditional banking rails.
Rapid User Growth
The jump from 250 million to 300 million users in roughly two months suggests Link is gaining traction as Stripe merchants activate it. That growth rate, 50 million users in about 60 days, indicates broad adoption beyond Stripe's largest enterprise customers.
Stripe has not disclosed what percentage of its merchant base has Link enabled, or how many of those 300 million users actively use the service versus having an account from a single purchase. The company also did not specify conversion rate improvements or other performance metrics.
For context, PayPal reported 436 million active accounts in its most recent quarter, though that includes Venmo and other products. Link's 300 million figure represents users across all merchants using the service, not Stripe account holders.
Cross-Border Commerce Trends
The French business data Gaybrick shared illustrates why payment method diversity matters. As more small and mid-sized companies sell internationally, they need payment infrastructure that works across borders without requiring deep technical resources or compliance expertise for each market.
Stripe has long positioned itself as the payments layer for internet businesses going global. Link extends that pitch to the checkout experience itself, bundling payment method variety with faster checkout and cross-merchant recognition.
The combination of accelerated growth and expanded payment methods positions Link as a more direct competitor to PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay in the race to become the default one-click checkout option across the web. Unlike those wallet products, Link operates as infrastructure beneath merchant checkout flows rather than a branded consumer product.
Businesses interested in Link can enable it through their Stripe dashboard. The service is available in over 50 countries and supports more than 100 payment methods, though availability varies by market.
